US newspaper reveals shocking revelations about Air India crash: Captain turned off fuel supply to engines

A cockpit recording between two pilots of the crashed Air India plane shows that the captain turned off the switches controlling the fuel supply to the plane’s engines.

On July 16, the Wall Street Journal (US) reported: “New details in the investigation into the Air India plane crash last month are shifting the focus to the captain in the cockpit.

According to sources familiar with the initial assessment of evidence collected by US officials in the investigation, the black box recording of the conversation between the two pilots shows that it was the captain who turned off the switches controlling the fuel supply to the plane’s two engines”.

According to the recording, the co-pilot on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner at that time asked the experienced captain why he had turned the switches to the “off” position after the plane left the runway.

The co-pilot expressed surprise and then panic, while the captain seemed to remain calm.

India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), aircraft manufacturer Boeing and national carrier Air India did not respond to requests for comment on the above information, according to Reuters.

The two pilots involved were captain Sumeet Sabharwal with a total of 15,638 flying hours, and co-pilot Clive Kunder with 3,403 flying hours.

A preliminary report released last week by India’s Air Accidents Investigation Branch described confusion in the cockpit shortly before the June 12 crash, and raised further questions about the location of the fuel cut-off switches.

An investigation is underway into what caused the Air India plane – carrying 230 passengers and 12 crew – to crash shortly after takeoff. Both black boxes have been recovered.
