Tsitsipas after slipping outside the top 20 in the ATP Rankings for the first time since 2018 hopes to turn his fortunes around. He has rejoined forces with father and coach Apostolos Tsitsipas. He is making his debut and chasing his second trophy of the season after starting Spring so well winning Dubai in March.
But it has all fallen apart somewhat since then for the Greek charge. The former World No.3 and ATP Finals champion is joined by Lorenzo Sonego who is defending champion in the tournament. He became the 11th active player to have won a title on outdoor hard, indoor hard, clay and grass by sealing the trophy last year. He will begin his title defence in North Carolina however searching for form as he has not won consecutive matches on hard courts since February.
Tallon Griekspoor and Luciano Darderi will seek to add to their 2025 titles too. The second and third seeds in Winston-Salem. The Dutchman won in Mallorca on the grass but is on a losing streak having lost the last three matches. He returns to Winston-Salem for the first time since 2023. Darderi has won three titles this year on the otherhand. He sealed victory in Marrakech, Bastad and Umag. But all of those are on clay. His record on hard courts in fact is 3-19. So while there are title winners in the field, it is also somewhat deceiving.

Former champions return for glory again
Sebastian Baez, Roberto Bautista Agut and Pablo Carreno Busta will all try and reclaim the title in Winston-Salem. Bautista Agut is playing for the first time here since winning the title in 2017. Match wise, Tsitsipas opens the draw and faces either Yunchaokete Bu or Chun Hsin Tseng. Marcos Giron is likely his first big test with the American being the 16th seed in Winston-Salem.
Below them is Sebastian Baez who is 10th seed. He opens against either Yoshihito Nishioka or Pablo Carreno Busta. The winner faces potentially Matteo Arnaldi. He is next up and faces either Botic van de Zandschulp or Adam Walton in the second round. Gabriel Diallo has been superb in recent months and continues his development. The Canadian ace faces Raphael Collignon or a qualifier. Jacob Fearnley is the other seed in this section. He opens against Hamad Medjedovic or Arthur Rinderknech.
Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard gets a bye through and faces David Goffin or Pedro Martinez. Alexandre Muller is the next seed and faces Borna Coric or a qualifier. Nuno Borges is seventh seed and takes on Kamil Majchrzak or Nicolas Jarry. Sebastian Korda after recent injury issues returns to face Sebastian Ofner or Vit Kopriva. Miomir Kecmanovic is 13th seed and faces Aleksandar Kovacevic or Filip Misolic.
Luciano Darderi is set for a tie against Brandon Holt or Mackenzie McDonald. Lorenzo Sonego faces Stefan Dostanic who seals a wildcard or a qualifier. Roberto Bautista Agut sits in the same section as Roman Safiullin or Christopher O’Connell.
Hugo Gaston or Marton Fucsovics is the second round assignment for Tallon Griekspoor as we head into the second half of the season and towards the US Open with this being the final tournament before the big major and for some it is much needed with a lack of points and a lack of form going into the big events.
