Umar Nurmagomedov Reflects on Khabib’s Legacy: ‘He Was Fanatical About Training — I’m Still Striving’

Belal Muhammad details Umar Nurmagomedov's training camp for UFC 321: ' Khabib is the craziest coach'

Few names in combat sports carry the kind of weight that “Nurmagomedov” does. For more than a decade, the family has represented the highest standard of discipline, humility, and dominance in mixed martial arts. But while Khabib Nurmagomedov retired as one of the greatest fighters of all time, his younger cousin Umar Nurmagomedov is still carving his own path — and he’s doing it with brutal honesty about the shadow he lives in.

In a recent interview that has resonated deeply with MMA fans, Umar spoke candidly about the difference between himself and his legendary cousin. His words were raw, humble, and revealing.

“Khabib could come home from a tough trip, arrive at 12 at night, change clothes, and go run,” Umar said. “If he didn’t manage to get even one training session during the day, he would still hit pads at home at night.”

He paused before adding,

“The difference between us is that he gave all of himself to this. And we don’t. You have to be honest.”

The Weight of Greatness

For Umar, now 28, the name Nurmagomedov is both an honor and a burden. He grew up watching his older cousin dominate the sport, not just with skill but with a relentless mindset. Khabib wasn’t merely a fighter — he was a symbol of obsession, sacrifice, and unshakable faith.

Umar, who has gone undefeated in his own right since joining the UFC, acknowledges that even though he shares the family’s talent and wrestling pedigree, his mentality isn’t yet the same.

“At 12 at night, I can force myself to go run maybe five times out of ten,” he admitted. “Because I think: he did it. He went. He worked. So I must, if I want to achieve something.”

That kind of self-awareness — rare in a sport built on bravado — is exactly what has endeared Umar to fans. His humility doesn’t come from weakness; it comes from respect.

‘He Was Fanatical About Training’

Khabib’s obsession with training has become the stuff of legend within MMA circles. Even among fighters known for their discipline, his level of commitment stood out as something beyond normal.

Teammates often recalled stories of Khabib running hills in the snow after midnight, fasting during Ramadan yet still sparring, or drilling takedowns long after practice had ended.

“He was fanatical about training,” Umar said. “Maybe also because the Almighty gave him this physical strength. In the gym, everything works for me — I can control guys, I can go for submissions. But in the cage, he (Khabib) is psychologically much stronger than me. And in the cage, I feel like something is missing.”

It’s a statement that reveals both respect and yearning. Umar doesn’t see Khabib as a rival but as a mirror — a reflection of what he could become if he finds that same unwavering mindset.

The Mental Edge That Made Khabib Unbreakable

Fans and analysts alike have long said that what made Khabib truly special wasn’t his wrestling, conditioning, or even his fight IQ — it was his mental fortitude.

From his early days fighting in Dagestan to his title run in the UFC, Khabib was known for his unshakeable self-belief. No matter the opponent — Conor McGregor, Dustin Poirier, Justin Gaethje — he imposed his will with quiet intensity.

Umar knows this better than anyone. He’s trained under the same roof, under the same watchful eyes of their mentor and Khabib’s late father, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov. Yet even within that environment, he feels the difference in mindset.

“In training, I can dominate,” he said. “But when I’m in the cage, it’s not the same. He had something inside him — an energy, a belief — that I’m still trying to find.”

It’s a rare admission from a fighter still undefeated. But Umar’s words don’t come from doubt; they come from a deep understanding of what true greatness demands.

The Legacy of Abdulmanap

The Nurmagomedov name doesn’t just represent athletic excellence — it represents a philosophy. That philosophy was built by Abdulmanap, the patriarch who trained not only Khabib and Umar but an entire generation of Dagestani fighters.

Abdulmanap believed that strength came not just from the body, but from the spirit. He demanded discipline, prayer, humility, and constant self-improvement. Khabib internalized that completely.

Umar grew up under the same lessons, but after Abdulmanap’s passing in 2020, the dynamic shifted. For Umar, the loss wasn’t just of a coach — it was of the man who shaped their family’s purpose.

“He taught us that faith and work go together,” Umar once said in another interview. “If you trust in God but don’t work, you won’t get anywhere. If you work but forget faith, you’ll lose yourself. Khabib understood that balance better than anyone.”

That balance — the fusion of spiritual and physical discipline — remains Umar’s greatest challenge and his greatest motivation.

A New Generation, Still Learning

While Khabib’s fighting career is over, the Nurmagomedov dynasty continues to thrive. Fighters like Islam Makhachev, Usman Nurmagomedov, and Umar himself are carrying the torch, each in their own way.

But Umar refuses to let fame or family legacy define him prematurely.

“People expect me to be like Khabib,” he said. “But there is only one Khabib. I want to be myself — and I want to earn it.”

That authenticity has made Umar one of the most respected prospects in the UFC. His striking continues to evolve, his wrestling remains elite, and his composure under pressure has impressed even seasoned analysts. Yet it’s his honesty that makes him stand out even more.

“Sometimes I think maybe I’m too honest,” he joked. “But I’d rather tell the truth than pretend I’m already great. I’m still striving.”

The Path Ahead

Umar’s career trajectory remains bright. Undefeated, technically gifted, and mentally aware, he represents the future of the lightweight division — and perhaps one day, the future of Dagestan’s fighting lineage.

He admits that finding Khabib’s level of obsession might not be easy, but he’s committed to trying.

“He set the standard,” Umar said. “Every time I feel tired or lazy, I remember him running at night. Then I get up. Maybe not every time,” he laughed, “but more and more.”

In that single line, Umar captures something that resonates far beyond MMA — the universal struggle of chasing greatness.

The Final Word

When asked what motivates him most, Umar’s answer was simple yet profound:

“Because he did it. And if he could give all of himself, maybe one day I can too.”

There’s no arrogance in his tone, no envy — only respect and quiet determination.

And that, perhaps, is the truest way to honor Khabib’s legacy: not by imitating him perfectly, but by continuing the pursuit he began — to be better every single day, inside the cage and beyond it.

“He was fanatical about training,” Umar said again with a smile. “I’m still striving.”

In those words lies not just a tribute to Khabib, but a glimpse of what makes the Nurmagomedov family so extraordinary — a relentless devotion to improvement, driven not by fame, but by faith and purpose.
