“You got to pick your poison”: Cam Newton berates Myles Garrett’s contract decision as $160,000,000 DE laments Browns’ loss to Patriots

Cam Newton berates Myles Garrett

Myles Garrett is unhappy with the Cleveland Browns’ offense for wasting a historic performance in their last game. But for Cam Newton, that is largely his fault.

Last Sunday, the star edge rusher set the franchise single-game sack record with five at the New England Patriots, but it was all in vain, as Dillon Gabriel had a mediocre outing with barely 150 passing yards and a pair of interceptions against as many touchdowns en route to a 32-13 loss. After the game, he said:

“I’m frustrated. I want to win. I don’t care how much time is on the clock. They’ve got their starters in. There’s a chance we can win. I want to be a part of that.”

He also expressed his wish that he would rather win despite having few sacks.

But speaking on Thursday’s episode of his 4th-&-1 podcast, former MVP Cam Newton ripped Garrett for putting himself in this position by accepting a four-year, $160-million extension rather than sticking to his trade demand:

“You got to pick your poison. You want to make a lot of money and be on a bad team, or you want to make good money and be on a great team. And I thought it was mighty strange when you signed back to Cleveland… I know he didn’t think that he was gonna automatically win, staying in Cleveland (and) winning the Super Bowl with that roster.”

After that loss, trade rumors circulated around Garrett again. However, on Saturday, The Athletic’s Dianna Russini gave this decisive update on his availability:

“Myles Garrett is not getting traded. Teams have checked in, but as one high-ranking source texted: ‘He’s a Brown and will remain a Brown.'”

Richard Sherman, Aaron Donald weigh in on Myles Garrett’s frustrations

Two more former players had their thoughts on Myles Garrett’s frustrations. First was Richard Sherman, who said that the edge rusher had to be more open-minded on his eponymous podcast (from 00:39 in the short below):

“I don’t see a world where they’re going to be competitive contenders. If I’m Myles Garrett, I’m having a conversation with my agent. I’m having a conversation with the front office.”

Meanwhile, Aaron Donald said on “The Inner Circle”:

“You can make all the plays you want; (but) if you’re not winning, it’s meaningless.”
