Rome Odunze’s father wants Bears to trade WR amid lack of targets in Ben Johnson’s offense

It seems like wide receiver Rome Odunze’s father, James, believes that his son’s future in the NFL is not with the Chicago Bears. On X, his dad re-tweeted a post that asked Ben Johnson’s team to trade him to a team that will effectively utilize his talents in the passing game.

“Can the bears trade Rome Odunze to a team that will actually throw to him,” the tweet read.

James Odunze also shared another tweet highlighting the wide receiver’s stats so far this season after eight games. His son has only been targeted 59 times with 31 receptions, 473 yards, and five touchdowns receiving.

During Sunday’s victory over the Bengals, Odunze was targeted just three times by quarterback Caleb Williams. Rookie Colston Loveland was targeted seven times for six receptions, 118 yards and two touchdowns receiving, including the one that won them the game in the fourth quarter.

According to Statmuse, Rome Odunze is ranked 22nd in terms of most targets for wide receivers this season. This is disappointingly low for someone who is the WR1 of a franchise like the Chicago Bears. Cincinnati Bengals star Ja’Marr Chase tops the chart with 107 targets, 76 receptions, 831 yards, and five TDs receiving.

The Bears drafted Odunze with the ninth overall pick in last year’s NFL draft. He agreed to a four-year rookie deal worth $22.7 million. During his rookie campaign, the wide receiver tallied 734 yards and three TDs receiving while his team finished fourth in the NFC North with a 5-12 record.
