On Tuesday, LIV Golf shocked fans when it announced it would abandon the 54-hole format that Greg Norman once labeled revolutionary. The league announced that, starting next season, LIV would adopt a 72-hole format, involving four days of golf.

While the decision has shocked a huge section of golf fans, Tyrrell Hatton recently made an interesting revelation. Hatton, 34, said that after the 2024 season came to an end, LIV Golfers were surveyed about whether they would be interested in moving to a 72-hole format.

Hatton further revealed that the majority of the golfers were against the 72-hole format. In a press conference ahead of the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, the British golfer said:

“At the end of my first season, there was a questionnaire that was filled out. One of the questions was about moving to 72 holes, and of everyone who filled it out, I think there was only three guys, initially, who had said [yes] about moving there [to 72 holes].”

While Tyrrell Hatton spoke about the results of the survey, it must be noted that the golfer also said he was “quite happy” that LIV would be implementing the 72-hole format for the next season. It must be noted that Hatton’s teammate Jon Rahm is also in favor of this move.

In a statement via LIV Golf, Jon Rahm expressed happiness over the PIF-backed tour adopting a 72-hole format. Rahm mentioned that this move was a win for the league and the players. He also explained how moving to 72 holes would be beneficial for LIV.

Rahm said:

“This is a win for the League and the players. LIV Golf is a player’s league. We are competitors to the core, and we want every opportunity to compete at the highest level and to perfect our craft. Moving to 72 holes is the logical next step that strengthens the competition, tests us more fully, and if the growing galleries from last season are any indication, delivers more of what the fans want.”

Apart from Rahm, even social media sensation and 2x Major winner Bryson DeChambeau supported the league’s decision to move to a 72-hole format. DeChamebeau, in a statement via LIV Golf, said that this change is “a fantastic evolution of the LIV product.
