The coaching drills Jon Rahm said his golf coach had him do to intentionally shorten his backswing

Jon Rahm has one of the more unique golf swings in the game today but it’s no fluke according to the man himself.

Rahm has become well known as being one of the longest hitters in the world but he’s also well known for having a minimal backswing.

Compared to someone like Rory McIlroy or Tommy Fleetwood, Rahm barely goes back with the club and still finds incredible power and accuracy.

However, while some might feel it’s unconventional and almost a bit lucky how Rahm manages to pull it off, according to Rahm, it was something his coach very intentionally had him working on.Jon Rahm after tearing his glove in half at the 2025 US Open

How Jon Rahm mastered his short backswing

We’ve all seen how far Jon Rahm can hit the golf ball and it’s pretty amazing to see him get the power he does from such a short backswing.

Nevertheless, it appears it is something he practiced, courtesy of his coach in Spain as a youngster.

Speaking on a previous tip video, Rahm revealed how his coach purposely had him swinging short, in order to keep the ball straight.

“Before I got to college and learned why I swing the way I do, as a kid I had a very strong grip, overswing and just to try to hammer hook everything, like every kid who was trying to get distance,” Rahm revealed.

“My swing coach in Spain, he said learn how to hit it straight. And he basically forced me to never get past my shoulder height. The goal was to have the club aiming at the sky and learn from there.

“There was also a drill where he would have me take the club here [as far back as the hip] and have me swing as hard as I could. Without me really understanding, he was making me move my lower body and creating that motion.”

Jon Rahm’s driving stats in 2025

As we mentioned, Jon Rahm remains one of the bigger hitters in the game despite not taking the club back as far as the others.

In 2025, Rahm averaged an impressive 323.3 yards off the tee, putting him 6th overall in the LIV Golf standings for that metric.

Top of the pile on LIV for that stat was Joaquin Niemann at 330.4, while Bryson DeChambeau was just shy on 328.8.

Over on the PGA Tour, Aldrich Potgieter leads the way with an average of 325 yards, just ahead of Rory McIlroy with 323.

In a nutshell, looking at those numbers, Rahm is right up there, which makes it all the more impressive he is able to do so with such a swing.
