The Indianapolis Colts are flying high this season with quarterback Daniel Jones leading the offense. However, it has been a stark contrast for Jones’ former team, the New York Giants.

The Giants, who made a 2-8 start to the season, fired coach Brian Daboll after their defeat against the Chicago Bears on Sunday. Daboll was in his fourth season as a coach in New York.

Jones, who played under Daboll before being released by the team in November last year, shared his feelings on the former coach’s firing.

“Yeah, I just kind of heard about it recently,” Jones said. “Obviously you never want to see anyone fired. It’s an unfortunate part of this business. So yeah, I think that’s the reaction. Hope the best for him and everybody there in New York.”

Jones was drafted by the Giants in 2019 and had a strong rookie season. However, he fell off in the subsequent seasons and was released last year. The promising quarterback signed a one-year deal with the Colts at the start of the year and has been able to turn around his slumping career.

Daboll’s firing comes in the wake of a $100,000 fine for the Giants coach last month for violating the NFL’s concussion protocol. Daboll has been accused of rushing quarterback Jaxson Dart amid his concussion issues.

Dart has been checked for a concussion four times this season, with Daboll’s play calling seemingly leaving the rookie quarterback with less protection. Sunday’s failed concussion test for Dart became the final straw for Daboll.

Brian Daboll’s firing was conveyed to Giants players before public announcement

While Daniel Jones was surprised to hear about Brian Daboll’s firing, the decision was reportedly conveyed to the Giants players a few hours before it was made public.

“The past few seasons have been nothing short of disappointing, and we have not met our expectations for this franchise,” co-owners John Mara and Steve Tisch said.. “We understand the frustrations of our fans, and we will work to deliver a significantly improved product.”

Daboll and Jones led the Giants to their first playoff win since the 2012 Super Bowl during the 2022 season. While Daboll was named the NFL’s coach of the year in his first year with the team, things went downhill for New York since.

Offensive coordinator Mike Kafka is taking over as the interim coach while general manager Joe Schoen begins the search for their next coach.
