Cowboys GM Jerry Jones makes stance clear on George Pickens’ future amid Dez Bryant’s advice to take a pay cut

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones couldn’t hide his feelings on the outstanding performance of George Pickens in the comeback win over the Philadelphia Eagles. The wide receiver recorded nine receptions for 146 yards and a touchdown as his team sealed a 24-21 victory.

The performance of Pickens, who was acquired via a trade with the Pittsburgh Steelers during the offseason, has raised a lot of questions about his future with the Cowboys. Jones had the opportunity to answer that on Monday, noting that he’s looking to tie him to a new deal.

“Of course, of course we are proud to have him and I don’t even want to play games with it, we’d love to have him on the team,” Jones said, via Jon Machota of The Athletic.

Jerry Jones was subsequently asked if he’d be open to reaching out to George Pickens’ agent right now to work on an extension contract. The Cowboys’ owner/GM, nonetheless, made it clear he has zero interest in picking up the phone to talk to an agent at the moment.

“I don’t just try to spend my day messing with agents as you well know,” Jones said. “(laughing) I’m proud he’s having the season he’s having. It exceeds anything we could have hoped for.”

With his performance this season, Pickens is anticipated to be among the top-paid wide receivers in the NFL in his next contract. While Jones expressed an interest in keeping him, it’s worth noting that the Cowboys already have fellow wide receiver Ceedee Lamb on a big payday. Dez Bryant recently advised Pickens to pick the Cowboys legacy over a paycheck.

Dak Prescott comments on George Pickens’ performances

The outstanding performance of George Pickens has immediately elevated him to become one of the most important players on the Cowboys roster. The team’s quarterback, Dak Prescott, had a lot to say about the wide receiver when asked whether he’s performed beyond expectations.

“It’s hard for me to say he exceeds my expectations,” Prescott said. “My expectations are limitless with that guy, and he’ll tell you, he’s not from here. I am sure you all read his article [in the Player’s Tribune]. He’s not from here. He’s not from this planet.

“I’m not gonna put limitations on him. … The guy loves the game, stays focused, and the communication, I know I’ve mentioned before, but [he talks] to other guys in the huddle about staying focused and to just keep doing what they’re doing.”

George Pickens enters Week 13 with 1,054 yards and eight touchdowns, ranking second in the league in passing yards and third in passing touchdowns. With six games to go in the regular season, Pickens is just 86 yards shy of his personal record of 1,140 yards, achieved in 2022.
