Kyle Shanahan shuts down Brock Purdy swap with Mac Jones amid 49ers QB1 struggles in 20-9 win vs. Panthers

Kyle Shanahan dismissed a quarterback shake-up after Brock Purdy had his roughest outing of the season in Monday’s victory over Carolina. Despite calls to turn to Mac Jones, the San Francisco 49ers coach maintained that Purdy remains in command of the offense.

Purdy signed a $265 million contract extension in May. Jones kept the 49ers competitive during Purdy’s injury absence, winning five of eight starts.

Shanahan addressed reporters following the 20-9 win at Levi’s Stadium. He was asked whether he considered making a switch at any point.

“No,” Shanahan said. “He (Purdy) just had three throws he’d love to take back. They’re all three good decisions. Just a hair late on them and when you’re a hair late on stuff, you can’t throw behind him and he threw it behind him and all three guys made him pay.”

Purdy completed 23 of 32 passes for 193 yards with one touchdown. He was efficient on short concepts, connecting on 22 of 24 attempts inside 10 yards. Purdy struggled when pushing vertically, completing 1 of 8 attempts beyond that distance. All three picks came on intermediate and deep throws.

It was his second game back after a toe injury sidelined him for six matchups. Purdy has thrown for 979 yards, eight touchdowns and seven interceptions this season.

Despite the turnovers, Brock Purdy and the 49ers entered halftime on Monday with a 10-3 lead, aided by a defensive showing that controlled field position.

San Francisco coach Kyle Shanahan made it clear to reporters that he didn’t need a halftime speech to motivate the quarterback and his teammates.

“No, he (Brock Purdy) was alright,” Shanahan said after the game.

“I communicated with him throughout the game and at halftime, but it was nothing big. (QB coach Mick Lombardi) is deal with him throughout the game too. Brock was fine. It was just three throws he’d like to take back.”

Mac Jones has completed 69.6% of his passes for 2,151 yards, 13 touchdowns and six interceptions this season. He has navigated the team to a 5-3 record in his starts.

Purdy said after the game that lingering discomfort from his toe injury did not influence his mechanics or confidence.
