Victor Perez recently made headlines by becoming the latest PGA Tour regular to switch allegiance to LIV Golf. The Frenchman replaced the relegated Frederik Kjettrup at Martin Kaymer’s Cleeks GC. Following the move, the 33-year-old has come out to cite PGA Tour’s ‘challenging’ rule changes one of the reasons for his move.

For the unversed, Perez earned a spot on the PGA Tour after the 2023 season, which saw him win his third DP World Tour title at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship. The golfer confirmed his move to LIV Golf by withdrawing from the last week’s RSM Classic, which he’s qualified for as 108th in the FedExCup Standings. Interestingly, this position was enough to gain him a full PGA Tour card for 2026 last year.

However, the American circuit reduced the full playing spots from top 125 players to the top 100, denying Perez automatic qualification for next season. The Scotland resident addressed the same and claimed the constant rule changes “makes the playing field really challenging to read.” The golfer admitted this played a part in his decision to join the Saudi-backed series with a 14-event schedule.

Victor Perez told bunkered.co.uk:

“Probably one of the points that I’ve struggled the most in America the last two years has been this kind of movement of the goalposts. Year after year the rule changes that basically makes the playing field like really challenging to read. You know, there’s been times early in the year where I thought I had qualified for one, but then actually I didn’t qualify and then end up qualifying for some.

Trying to keep up with other things they were trying to do made it a bit more difficult. This year you come about and then they’re cutting 25 cards because all of a sudden, you know, pace of play is an issue.”

Furthermore, Victor Perez claimed that he reached out to PGA Tour’s new CEO Brian Rolapp to gain clarity of the circuit’s ever-changing landscape. The Cleeks GC player said he had a “really long conversation” with the new circuit chief before making his ultimate call to join LIV Golf. The Frenchman claimed that he was looking for stability on the breakaway tour.

Victor Perez added:

“I felt like I was at a point in my career where I was looking for a bit more stability, which is something that I really hadn’t had, and LIV seems to be doing this… Obviously there’s going to be changes, and this year there’s tweaks… but I felt like the schedule is set. These are the events you play and like I said, it made a big difference.”

Perez justified his move by downplaying his performance this season. It is pertinent to note that he had missed the Butterfield Bermuda Championship cut at the Port Royal Golf Course a few days ahead of his move to join LIV. Now, Perez joins Martin Kaymer, Richard Bland and Adrian Meronk on the Cleeks GC side, which finished 12th in LIV Golf’s 13-team standings.
