The New York Giants suffered a disappointing loss to the New England Patriots on Monday, with a botched field goal by kicker Younghoe Koo one of the lowlights.

Koo joined New York in September after the Atlanta Falcons cut him. He replaced injured kicker Graham Gano on the Giants roster.

Koo pointed to cold weather for the failed attempt in the 33-15 loss to New England.

“I was approaching the ball and, cold weather, the ball kind of slipped out at the bottom so it was moving,” Koo said on Wednesday. “I wasn’t able to kick through the ball. The ball was moving when I was driving to it, so I just pulled up on it.”

The play happened in the second quarter with New York down 10 points. Koo set up for a 47-yard try, but his foot hit the ground and missed the ball completely. Giants holder Jamie Gillan got tackled by Jeremiah Pharms for a 13-yard loss after grabbing the loose ball.

Mike Kafka addresses team’s struggles after Giants drop seventh straight

Giants interim coach Mike Kafka didn’t sugarcoat his team’s performance on Monday. It was New York’s seventh consecutive loss, and dropped Kafka’s record to 0-3 since taking over.

“Today wasn’t our best effort,” Kafka said after the game.

Younghoe Koo’s miss wasn’t the Giants’ only special teams problem. Gunner Olszewski fumbled a kickoff in the second half when Marte Mapu and Christian Elliss stuffed him. New England recovered at New York’s 27 and Andy Borregales converted a field goal.

Koo said Jamie Gillan wasn’t at fault for the failed kick.

“Jamie did a good job of catching it and putting it back,” Koo said. “But at that point, it was too late.”

Jaxson Dart played in his first game after missing two weeks with a concussion. The Giants (2-11) will face the Washington Commanders after returning from their bye week.
