Jalen Hurts Makes Unwanted NFL History: Eagles QB Becomes First Ever to Record Two Turnovers on the Same Play in Costly OT Loss

Jalen Hurts committed two turnovers on one play and made NFL history.

A Stunning Monday Night Collapse

INGLEWOOD, Calif. — What was supposed to be a statement rebound game for the Philadelphia Eagles instead turned into an unforgettable disaster for quarterback Jalen Hurts. In a wild 22–19 overtime loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, Hurts made NFL history in the worst possible way: becoming the first player on record to commit two turnovers on the same play.

The shocking sequence was emblematic of a night filled with missteps, miscues, and missed opportunities. For an Eagles team already struggling through a mid-season slump, the performance raised new concerns about stability, confidence, and leadership heading into the final stretch of the regular season.

The Play That Will Live in Infamy

Midway through the second quarter, with the Eagles facing a manageable third-and-two, Hurts attempted a quick pass over the middle intended for wide receiver A.J. Brown. Instead, Chargers defensive lineman Da’Shawn Hand stepped in front of the throw and secured the interception.

As Hand began to return the ball, Eagles guard Tyler Steen brought him down, jarring the ball loose. Hurts, in a quick attempt to correct the mistake, dived onto the fumble and briefly secured possession—only to have the ball knocked out of his hands again.

What followed was a scramble that ended with the Chargers recovering the football, and Hurts becoming the first player since 1978—the earliest year play-by-play turnover data exists—to record an interception and a fumble on the same snap.

The moment drew gasps from commentators, stunned reactions from fans, and triggered immediate debates online about Hurts’ decision-making and ball security.

A Night of Errors Across the Offense

While Hurts’ historic blunder grabbed headlines, the quarterback’s struggles hardly stopped there. He finished the night with five total turnovers, tying the most by any Eagles player in a single game since official data tracking began. He later added two more interceptions, including one that sealed the overtime defeat.

Still, blame could not be placed solely on Hurts. Veteran receiver A.J. Brown had one of the roughest outings of his career, dropping multiple passes—including one in the end zone late in the fourth quarter—and deflecting another into a defender’s hands for an interception.

“That last one in the end zone… that one hurt the most,” Brown admitted after the game. “I’m more than capable of making those plays.”

Missed catches, miscommunications, and mental lapses compounded the Eagles’ offensive woes. Despite flashes of brilliance—such as Saquon Barkley’s stunning 52-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter—the unit couldn’t maintain consistency when it mattered most.

A Defense Fighting to Keep the Team Afloat

While the offense stumbled, Philadelphia’s defense kept them in the game until the final moments. Vic Fangio’s unit delivered seven sacks and repeatedly pressured Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert, giving the Eagles numerous chances to take control.

However, those defensive stands were overshadowed by offensive turnovers that continually reset momentum.

In overtime—after the Chargers struck first with a field goal—the Eagles marched down the field with urgency, seemingly ready to steal the win. But Hurts’ final attempt toward Jahan Dotson was tipped and intercepted at the 1-yard line, closing the door on Philadelphia’s comeback hopes.

Hurts Takes Accountability

After the game, Hurts did not mince words.

“I didn’t play well enough. Too many turnovers,” he said. “We had a lot of chances, especially on their side of the 50, and I wasn’t able to get us in the box.”

Hurts, widely admired for his poise and leadership, carried the weight of the loss on his shoulders. But he also emphasized resilience, urging his team to respond with urgency in the coming weeks.

“It stings,” Hurts said. “But how do you respond? That’s the only thing that matters now.”

Coaching Staff Stands Firm—For Now

Head coach Nick Sirianni defended his quarterback while acknowledging the collective failure.

“This game is the ultimate team game,” Sirianni said. “It’s never just on one person. Jalen always has the ball in his hands, and I know he’ll own it. I’ve got to do a better job of putting him in better situations.”

Asked about potential lineup changes or adjustments to coaching responsibilities, Sirianni insisted the team would “stay the course.”

“We’ll keep grinding and work our way out of this hole,” he said.

A Season Nearing the Edge

With the loss, the Eagles have now dropped three straight games, falling to 8–5. Though still ahead of the Dallas Cowboys in the NFC East standings, the gap has narrowed considerably—raising questions about whether Philadelphia can hold on to the division lead.

The remaining schedule paints a mixed picture. The Eagles will host the struggling Las Vegas Raiders next, followed by a crucial matchup against the Washington Commanders, then trips to Buffalo before closing the season at home.

The path forward is tightening, and momentum is slipping.

What Happens Next?

Jalen Hurts’ historic blunder may be the defining moment of the game, but the broader story is one of a team searching for answers. With offensive instability, a shaken quarterback, and rising pressure from within the division, the Eagles are entering a defining stretch.

Can Hurts shake off one of the worst performances of his career? Can the offense regain its rhythm? Can the Eagles restore confidence before the postseason arrives?

The next few weeks will determine whether this game becomes just a painful chapter—or the beginning of a collapse.
