Tom Brady takes cheeky jab at Mike Vrabel over Patriots’ resurgence with Drake Maye: “Offense is carrying the defense like early 2000s”

Tom Brady takes cheeky jab at Mike Vrabel over Patriots

Tom Brady drew parallels to how Mike Vrabel and the Patriots’ 2025 success is mostly because of the Drake Maye-led offense, similar to what transpired back in the early 200s with him under center.

During an appearance on the “Colin Cowherd show,” the retired seven-time Super Bowl champion had high praise for the Patriots quarterback and highlighted his contribution on the field this season. He took a slight jab at coach Vrabel by highlighting how the defense still has some work to do in order to catch up to the offense.

“With Drake, he has the physical ability, he has the size,” Brady said. “But I think in terms of physical skills set, his downfield passing is just awesome. So, you know, (OC) Josh McDaniels has done an incredible job for the Patriots. Drake is running the same system as I was in.

“I know how good that system is for quarterbacks. How Josh does teach these young quarterbacks. … So, he’s in a great system to be successful. Vrabel is focusing on the defense as he should be. Josh focus is on the offense. That offense, just like the early 2000s, the offense is carrying the defense just like in Vrabel’s defensive days when I was a young second-year quarterback in New England. That’s the way it goes.”

The Patriots acquired Drake Maye with the third overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft. He began as the backup to Jacoby Brissett before quickly taking over the starting job. During his rookie debut campaign, he led the team to a 4-13 record.

However, with Mike Vrabel as the new coach this season, the Patriots currently lead the AFC East with an 11-2 record and a 10-game winning streak. Drake Maye has tallied 3,412 yards and 23 TDs passing, with his team ranked as the second-best passing offense this season, averaging 249.7 yards and 23 touchdowns.

Bills star Josh Allen shares his honest thoughts on facing Drake Maye and the Patriots in Week 15

Josh Allen and the Bills will face Drake Maye and the Patriots this Sunday.

During Wednesday’s press conference, the 2024 NFL MVP had high praise for Maye and his success this year.

“He’s playing like a veteran quarterback, he’s seeing things extremely well, he plays at a great pace, looks like things have slowed down for him,” Allen said. “We hate to see that. But I’m happy for how well he’s playing because he’s a great human being on top of being a football player. We just have to figure out how to secure a victory on Sunday.”

The Patriots vs Bills game will kick off at 1 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on CBS.
