Cowboys owner Jerry Jones expresses disappointment in Matt Eberflus-led defense despite moving DC from sidelines

Jerry Jones reacts to Matt Eberflus

Jerry Jones has made his feelings known about Matt Eberflus’ first season as the Dallas Cowboys’ defensive coordinator.

With the former Chicago Bears head coach at the helm, America’s Team has struggled, allowing a league-worst 4,291 yards and 33 touchdowns in the air. They are also second-worst in rushing touchdowns allowed at 23, ahead of only the Buffalo Bills, and lie within the bottom ten in rushing yards allowed at 1,972.

They have also given up the second-most total first downs at 322, ahead of only the Washington Commanders, and are also a bottom-five squad when it comes to 3rd-down conversions allowed at 87. Arguably the only good thing to say about them is that they are tied for fifth-most total tackles at 976.

And a day after the Cowboys defeated the Commanders 30-23 on Christmas, Jones shared his disappointment at how his panned out during his appearance on 105.3 The Fan on Friday:

“To be very candid with you, the loss against Detroit was a surprise to me. I thought we had turned the corner defensively. … I thought it was onward and upward at that point.”

Jerry Jones on @1053thefan when asked how close he thinks the Cowboys are: “To be very candid with you, the loss against Detroit was a surprise to me. I thought we had turned the corner defensively. … I thought it was onward and upward at that point.”

He also hinted at changes in the coming offseason:

“We got a lot of work to do over there. But we can do it. … Some of these teams have had the same continuity on their defensive scheme for years. That’s the game.”

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones on @1053thefan when asked if he’s pleased scheme-wise and with the coaching staff on the defensive side of the ball: “No. No. Not at all. We have a lot of work to do over there. But we can do it.”

Jerry Jones discusses Logan Wilson’s absence from Cowboys’ win at Commanders

Jerry Jones’ 2025 season was marked by a conscious effort to improve the Cowboys’ run defense.

A week after the preseason, he boldly traded Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers for Kenny Clark a week after the preseason. Then, before the trade deadline, he brought in Quinnen Williams and Logan Wilson from the AFC.

Of the three, only Wilson did not see the field on Thursday, as Matt Eberflus elected to play Shemar James and Kenneth Murray. And the decision baffled Jones, who said:

“He planned to be in there, we planned to have him in there. … He needs to be in there. He has good instincts. We got him because he reads the play quick and can basically be in his lane of responsibility and react quick. It’s critical that a linebacker have quick reacting. He’s able to do that. That’s why we got him.”

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones on @1053thefan on why LB Logan Wilson didn’t play yesterday: “I don’t have an explanation for you for why Wilson wasn’t in there. We planned to have him in there. He needs to be in there. He has good instincts. The reason we got him was because he reads

The Cowboys will look to end their season at exactly .500 at the New York Giants next week.
