Collin Morikawa may have struggled over the past 12 months but he is still one of the very best iron players on the PGA Tour.
That said, Morikawa‘s lack of distance off the tee makes it very hard for him to compete when he’s not dialled in with his irons.
However, Justin Thomas gave the 28-year-old some brilliant advice during his early days on the PGA Tour to help him whenever he played alongside the likes of Brooks Koepka and Jon Rahm.
Of course, Rahm and Koepka left the PGA Tour in 2022, although the latter made a surprise exit from LIV Golf just last week.

Still, Morikawa has played with both golfers in major championships over the past three years.
Interestingly, Morikawa made a change after receiving advice from Rahm in 2025, adding a couple of degrees of loft to all of his irons.
And many years before that, it was Thomas who gave Morikawa some advice pertaining to a potential issue that players like Rahm could have caused the two-time major winner.
Justin Thomas’s advised Collin Morikawa about Brooks Koepka and Jon Rahm issue
Morikawa has already carved out a stellar career due, in most part, to his exceptional iron play.
His putting can be red-hot at times as well. Sure, he’s streaky with the flat-stick, but when he’s on, he’s seriously on.
However, Morikawa’s lack of speed and distance off the tee has proved problematic at times.
And when speaking to Golf Digest, he opened up on how he could easily have fallen into the trap of chasing speed after playing with the likes of Rahm and Koepka during his early days out on Tour.
“It’s easy to be seduced by distance, especially out here on tour,“ Morikawa explained.
“I see guys like Brooks Koepka and Jon Rahm fire balls for miles and think, Yeah, I’d like some of that. But one of the best pieces of advice I’ve received since turning pro came from Justin Thomas.
“He told me to know myself and stay true to that. I got to the PGA Tour by playing a certain way, and there’s no reason to make changes simply because the courses are longer and the competition is tougher.“
That advice from Thomas really is spot on.
It is also an example of how the majority of PGA Tour players try to help out their fellow pros as much as they can.
Justin Thomas’ advice for Collin Morikawa was pure gold
Too many players these days try to force changes that really aren’t needed and their overall game suffers as a result.
Justin Thomas will never win a major again – change my mind
Whether that be trying to hit a different shot-shape or attempting to gain more speed and distance off the tee, the end result is usually the same.
Morikawa sticking to his guns after the advice he received from Thomas has turned out to be a really wise move.
Sure, he has struggled desperately over the past year or so, but he does have two major championships to his name.
And it would be a real surprise if he went through the rest of his career without adding to that tally.
