Rory McIlroy opened up about the possibility of Brooks Koepka’s return to play on the PGA Tour. The Northern Irish golfer played on Friday in his first game of the second season of TGL. His team, Boston Common GC, competed against the Los Angeles GC.
In a TGL pregame show, the world No. 2 was asked about the statement he made on “The Overlap” podcast. On Friday morning in the podcast, McIlroy said that the LIV golfers had “paid their consequences” and he would be “OK” if the players returned to the PGA Tour.
McIlroy was asked about his comments, and in response, the Northern Irish golfer hinted at a possible return of Brooks Koepka.
“I mean they should be willing to comeback first that a big thing…..one of the pretty prominent players maybe decided what he wants to do, ” McIlroy said. “But yeah, I mean it would be a great thing to get some of the great players here and play in TGL as well.”
Meanwhile, in “The Overlap” podcast, McIlroy said (1:05:47 timestamp):
“They’ve made the money, but they’ve paid their consequence in terms of the reputation and some of the things they’ve lost by going over there. If it made the overall tour stronger to have Bryson DeChambeau back and whoever else, I would be OK with it.”
Notably, Brooks Koepka has decided to leave LIV Golf. He announced his decision last month, but has not shared any updates about his future plans so far. The American golfer was one of the earlier signings of the Saudi league and enjoyed a pretty successful time in the league.
He won five tournaments on the LIV Golf but struggled with his game in 2025, and ahead of the start of the 2026 season, he made an exit from the league. It would be interesting to see if Koepka would return to play on the PGA Tour again.
Rory McIlroy says it would be “good” to have Brooks Koepka back on PGA Tour
Rory McIlroy opened up about Brooks Koepka’s possible return to the PGA Tour after winning the TGL game on Friday. His team, Boston Common Golf, registered its first win in the history of the tech-infused series by defeating Los Angeles Golf Club 7-5. Boston Common Golf was winless in the last season.
After the win, in an exclusive interview with The Palm Beach Post, the Northern Irish golfer talked about having Koepka back on the PGA Tour.
“Does it make sense if Brooks wanted to play the PGA Tour again to get him back as soon as possible? Absolutely,” McIlroy said. “What Brooks has done in the game of golf, it would be good for everyone to have him back.
“It’s hard (because) you can’t treat one person differently than you treat others. And as much as the Tour would like to treat Brooks differently, it sets a legal precedent, because of the lawsuits that have been going on and everything else behind the scenes,” he added.
Brooks Koepka had enjoyed tremendous success on the PGA Tour before he joined LIV Golf in 2022. He won nine tournaments on the PGA Tour, with his last win coming in 2021 at the Waste Management Phoenix Open. After joining LIV Golf, he won his fifth major at the PGA Championship in 2023.
