“It’s an emotional time”: Stefon Diggs speaks out for first time after being hit with assault charges

Stefon Diggs was recently charged with assault in relation to an altercation he had with his private chef last month. Now, after two days of silence, he is blunt about what he thinks of the matter.

On Friday, the New England Patriots wide receiver told reporters:

“Obviously, it’s a different time, a very emotional time. … It’s an open case, so I definitely can’t even say anything about it. I will be open to any football questions, anything you want to know. I just don’t want to be rude or disrespectful in any way, so if anybody asks me a question pertaining to it, I’m obviously just gonna give you a look.”

Quarterback Drake Maye had voiced support for Diggs during his own media availability on Wednesday:

“He means a lot to this team. … He gives off the persona of one of those guys you wanna be teammates with. And I think that’s one of the best things about him that I’ve kind of learned, is how awesome it is to be his teammate and be there with him.”

Meanwhile, head coach Mike Vrabel simply said:

“I would say not disappointing at all. These are allegations.”

Stefon Diggs’ teammate Christian Barmore also declines to address criminal allegations

As it turns out, however, Stefon Diggs is not the only Patriot to face criminal charges.

Earlier this week, defensive tackle Christian Barmore was charged with domestic violence in relation to an August incident involving him and his girlfriend. He is expected to be arraigned early next month.

And like Diggs, Barmore declined to address his case:

“I’m focused on Miami and playing football.”

And Drake Maye also voiced support for him:

“I love talking (expletive) with B-More. He’s passionate about football, passionate about the game. He’s one of those guys in the locker room that you want to have rushing the passer. He loves quarterbacks, too, especially his own, but he loves getting after them.”

The Patriots end their season against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday. Kickoff is at 4:25 pm ET on Fox.
