Jalen Hurts may be well on his way to outstaying his welcome in Pennsylvania. On Friday, The Athletic’s Mike Silver released a feature detailing the turmoil that engulfed the Philadelphia Eagles’ offense during the 2025 season.
At one point, he claimed that the quarterback deserved much of the blame for the collapse of the team’s Super Bowl defense, which culminated in a 23-19 loss to the San Francisco 49ers in the Wild Card Round:
“For all that the quarterback has accomplished, including two standout performances on the sport’s biggest stage (one of which earned him Super Bowl MVP honors), he has been the source of much internal frustration, including from teammates.”

While Hurts’ passing yardage did increase from 2,903 in 2024 to 3,224, his receivers saw decreased usage and productivity. The foremost of them was AJ Brown, who went from 1,079 yards and a third straight All-Pro selection to barely making 1,003 (five fewer than DeVonta Smith) and most notably vented his frustrations during a livestream.
Most damningly, however, none of the Eagles’ other wideouts managed to reach even 400 yards combined – for context, Dallas Goedert had 591 on his own. In fact, Jahan Dotson’s 262 yards were eleven fewer than what Saquon Barkley produced.
Barkley himself had a precipitous fall from the heights he attained in 2024, going from 125.3 yards per game to just 71.3. As a result, he collected only 1,140 total rushing yards when he had 2,005 the previous year.
Eagles projected to go for quarterback in draft as doubts over Jalen Hurts’ viability arise
Much as Jalen Hurts was drafted in 2020 as a potential replacement for then-franchise face Carson Wentz, the Eagles may be tempted to find a potential replacement for him in three months. In that same feature, Mike Silver wrote:
“Some NFL sources familiar with the Eagles’ organizational mindset believe they might draft a quarterback this spring; backup Tanner McKee, a 2023 sixth-round selection, is also highly regarded within the building.”
While the organization seems unlikely to move on from Hurts given his $255-million contract, one move it could make is restructuring Brown’s contract, if not trading him away (since the latter option will create $72 million in dead money pre-June 1).
