Lee Trevino once made it very clear to the USGA and the R&A what rule he would like to see changed.

Trevino is one of the most highly respected voices in the game, due to the magnificent career he enjoyed.

He won 29 PGA Tour events including an incredibly impressive six major championships.

However, Trevino has always been extremely outspoken as well, and never shies away from making controversial comments.

Should AimPoint be banned?

The 86-year-old is actually very popular with golf fans because of that.

And eight years ago, Trevino certainly didn’t hold back when he urged the USGA and the R&A to change one specific golf rule.

Lee Trevino made it clear which club the USGA needed to ban immediately

There are many rules and regulations in the game of golf today which have been called into question recently.

However, the six-time major champion believes that golf’s governing bodies have made things too complicated for themselves regarding one particular rule.

When speaking to Bunkered way back in 2018, Trevino insisted that long putters should be banned for the good of the game.

“I’m totally against the long putter,” he said.

“Always have been. I talked to the USGA, I talked to the PGA, I talked to everybody until I was blue in the face, and said, you took the driver and took it to where it was only 48 inches long.

They made a rule. The size of the head of the driver can only be 460cc. Okay.

“Now, they have the rule where the club has to be at least 18 inches long, that’s a rule. Why can’t they make the putter the shortest club in your bag?

Then if you want to anchor it, stick it in your pocket, or whatever you want to do with it, you do it. You understand? If you can anchor with a 35-inch putter, anchor with it.

“They could make it so easy. Why do they make it so difficult? Just make it the shortest club in your bag.”

Answer for the USGA and the R&A is obvious

Trevino is bang on the money with those comments.

What is the one golf rule you would change if you had the opportunity?

The USGA and the R&A have just made things harder for themselves by implementing the non-anchoring to the chest or chin rule.

They changed the rule in 2016 which meant that players were no longer allowed to anchor the end of their grip to their bodies.

However, some players still anchor the putter grip to their arms, so what’s the difference?

And if they don’t, many still use the long putter and hold the butt of the grip an inch or so away from their body … so they say.

The simplest thing for golf’s governing bodies would be to implement a rule whereby putters in all professional events cannot exceed 36 inches in length.

It just seems like an absolute no-brainer.
