Aaron Glenn is currently purging the New York Jets’ coaching staff, and he took the biggest step yet on Tuesday by firing erstwhile offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand.
For Fox Sports’ Ralph Vacchiano, however, the move has come too late. He wrote on social media:
“Aaron Glenn waiting three weeks to fire OC Tanner Engstrand is basically malpractice. Almost half the league had vacancies at offensive coordinator. … Was he just waiting for all the top candidates to be hired elsewhere so he could just grab whoever was left?”

For context, during the time that Glenn dithered on firing Engstrand, multiple teams changed offensive coordinators. In the AFC alone, the Los Angeles Chargers replaced Greg Roman with Mike McDaniel.
The Miami Dolphins promoted Bobby Slowik to replace Frank Smith, while Eric Bieniemy returned to the Kansas City Chiefs to succeed Matt Nagy. And on the same day Engstrand was fired, the Tennessee Titans hired Brian Daboll in place of Nick Holz.
Nevertheless, a few other intriguing candidates are available for the Jets.
Joe Lombardi joined Engstrand at the unemployment line on Tuesday when the Denver Broncos fired him after losing the AFC championship game. Kevin Patullo needs a new home after being dropped by the Philadelphia Eagles. Meanwhile, the likes of Kliff Kingsbury, Brian Callahan, and Frank Reich offer head coaching experience.
Former GM blasts Aaron Glenn after Jets’ disastrous 3-14 record in 2025
It is not preposterous to say that Aaron Glenn had a disastrous introduction to head coaching. The Jets went 3-14, easily among the NFL’s dregs, and infamously became the first team ever to record no interceptions since the league started tracking the stat in 1933.
The hits have not stopped after that, however. Speaking recently to ESPN’s Rich Cimini, an anonymous former general manager claimed that Glenn failed in his objective of changing the culture within the team:
“He talked about swagger and toughness, but I didn’t see any of that. They played like a bunch of guys punching time clocks; they didn’t want to be there.”
The new league year commences on March 11. The Jets hold the second overall pick in the draft.
