Scottie Scheffler posted a second round 65 at the WM Phoenix Open on Friday, as he made his 66th consecutive cut on the PGA Tour.
Scheffler‘s game was far better on day two than it was during his opening round, when he posted a score of 73.
The American hasn’t been anywhere near his best at the WM Phoenix Open, but he’s still just about in contention to win.
Do you think Scottie Scheffler will beat Tiger Woods’ consecutive cuts record?
He’s not even halfway there right now…
Scheffler changed his grip after day one of the Phoenix Open and he improved upon his first-round score by eight shots as a result.
His driving and approach play have been really poor in the desert this week, and not just by his standards either.
The 29-year-old currently ranks 40th in strokes gained off the tee and 37th in strokes gained approach after two rounds at TPC Scottsdale.
Scottie Scheffler is refusing to put TaylorMade’s new Qi4D driver in his bag
TaylorMade released their brand new Qi4D driver last month.
Scheffler debuted the driver at the American Express, but he switched it out after just one round for his trusty old Qi10.
And it seems that TaylorMade still have a lot of work to do before the 29-year-old puts it in his bag permanently for tournaments.
Scheffler spoke to reporters after his second round in Phoenix on Friday and responded when asked why he’s still using his Qi10 driver, rather than the new Qi4D model.
“Yeah, I think we’re making progress. I can be a difficult person to get a club in the bag,“ Scheffler admitted.
“I’m a little bit averse to change as it is, and I have got a driver in my bag that’s won quite a lot of golf tournaments; had a lot of success with it.
“It’s just one of those things that is tough. I’m not going to put anything in the bag unless I feel it’s better.
“We are getting really close. There are some improvements I’ve for sure seen in the new driver. It just hasn’t gotten quite where it needs to be in order for me to put it in competition.“
What happened when Scottie Scheffler tested the Qi4D
The world number one obviously extensively tested TaylorMade’s new driver offering throughout the off-season.
Is Scottie Scheffler more likely to end up with 50 PGA Tour wins and 10 majors or 25 wins and 5 majors?
Have we already seen the best of Scottie Scheffler?
And the results were remarkable.
Scheffler gained 3.3 mph ball speed with the Qi4D and an impressive six yards of carry.
However, he clearly doesn’t have full trust in his shot dispersion just yet.
Scheffler is quite clearly a perfectionist, and he will not put the TaylorMade Qi4D in his bag permanently until he’s 100 per cent comfortable with it.
