Joe Schoen retained his job as the New York Giants general manager following a forgettable 2025 season. The Giants finished 4-13 and missed the playoffs.
With the NFL draft a few weeks away, Schoen has come out to debunk rumors about his role.
“I’m still the General Manager of the team and my role has not changed, Schoen said via Jordan Raanan.
“I’m still tasked with leading the entire football operation.”

Joe Schoen’s need to clarify likely arose from the Giants decision to have new head coach John Harbaugh report directly to ownership rather than to him as general manager. It’s a new model for the Giants.
Furthermore, according to Yahoo Sports, the new senior vice president of football operations and strategy, Dawn Aponte, will be reporting directly to Harbaugh. Schoen has mle pushed back on the impression that he’ll be limited to scouting duties ahead of the NFL Scouting Combine and draft.
Joe Schoen’s New York Giants have a number of needs entering the 2026 draft
Joe Schoen is preparing for perhaps the most important draft of his tenure with the New York Giants. The team has a range of positional needs on offense and defense.
The New York Giants need another wide receiver to either line up across Malik Nabers or replace him when he’s out injured. Players like Jordyn Tyson and Carnell Tate should be available at pick five.
The defense could also use an upgrade. That could be sorted via free agency and the draft. The Giants need a linebacker, an edge rusher, and a cornerback. Their thinness at those positions made them a frequent target for creative offensive coordinators.
Joe Schoen needs to ace this draft as there’s a new head coach in John Harbaugh. Harbaugh is a Super Bowl winner and is coming to New York to compete rather than partake in a perpetual rebuild.
Failing to make impactful draft picks and striking out on free agency might cost Schoen his job this time next year.
