Why Jordan Spieth will rue his decision to not return to the Cognizant Classic this year

Like many notable names on the PGA Tour, Jordan Spieth has decided to not play this week at the Cognizant Classic during a congested run in the schedule.

The Cognizant Classic has certainly suffered for being surrounded by four significant events on the PGA Tour schedule. Just one player in the top 30 in the world rankings is in the field this week at PGA National.

Where will Tiger Woods finish if he plays The Masters this year?

Tiger is not ruling it out…

Jordan Spieth is one of the players sitting this event out. He did feature at both the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and the Genesis Invitational despite not qualifying for a spot in the signature events at the start of 2026.

While you can understand his desire to rest up, it does have the potential to be a mistake from Spieth.

Jordan Spieth’s driving statistics are a concern

PGA National is not the force it once was. But it is still a golf course that puts a premium on keeping the ball in the fairway.

On current evidence, that is an area that Spieth is struggling with – despite his bright start to 2026.

Spieth is 118th on the PGA Tour for strokes gained off the tee. He is not the longest hitter – averaging just over 307 yards – but accuracy is a particularly big problem.

Spieth is 140th for driving accuracy. Crucially, he is not particularly consistent in missing the fairway on one side. He is 136th for left rough tendency and 139th for right rough.

So PGA National would arguably provide a fantastic test with major championship season looming.

The Cognizant Classic saw Spieth impress in 2025

The Cognizant Classic provided one of Spieth’s four top 10s on the PGA Tour in 2025. He actually went into the final round just one shot behind eventual winner, Joe Highsmith.

In the end he finished tied for ninth. But it appeared to be a step in the right direction for the Texan.

He is arguably in better form than he was 12 months ago. So he could have gone into this week with genuine confidence about his chances of securing a first PGA Tour victory since 2022.

Spieth ending that wait for a win before the majors come around would have been beneficial, particularly if he found himself in contention down the stretch at The Players or even The Masters.

It would have also been a much-needed boost to the event to have Spieth teeing it up.

Jordan Spieth may have owed the PGA Tour a start at PGA National

Obviously, you could make the case that Spieth has given plenty to the PGA Tour over the years. But he has received a number of signature event invites since the start of 2025.

Spieth spoke about not wanting to use sponsor invites any longer. That statement would have looked a lot more genuine if he decided to play this week at PGA National.

Ultimately, the PGA Tour is getting more and more ruthless. Spieth has to do what he believes is going to benefit his game the most. And rest is obviously an important part of that, as is being at home with his family.

But Spieth has some momentum at long last. So it may have been time for him to take a page from Jacob Bridgeman’s book before he won at Riviera and just keep playing with some huge events just around the corner.
