Quarterback J.J. McCarthy’s future with the Minnesota Vikings might be in jeopardy.
On Saturday, NFL analyst Tony Pauline shared some concerning updates about the quarterback. According to him, the Vikings might be coming up with a plan to move on from McCarthy.
“A source tells me the team is really down on quarterback J.J. McCarthy and is ready to move on from their 2024 first-round pick. The team will bring in another signal caller to compete and eventually replace McCarthy, who was the 10th selection of the 2024 NFL draft,” Pauline wrote.

McCarthy signed a four-year, $21.85 million rookie deal after joining the Vikings. However, he missed out on his entire debut campaign after suffering a torn meniscus during the preseason. Sam Darnold was brought in to be the team’s QB1.
He impressed with his performance, leading the Vikings to the playoffs. However, they lost to the Los Angeles Rams in a wild-card showdown. Coach Kevin O’Connell and his team did not retain Darnold for another year. He went on to join the Seahawks while the Vikings named J.J. McCarthy as their QB1.
However, the quarterback had an underwhelming campaign riddled with injuries. He played in 10 games and recorded 1,632 yards and 11 TDs passing. The Vikings finished third in the NFC North with a 9-8 record, failing to make the playoffs.

Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell shares his thoughts on J.J. McCarthy’s future with the franchise
On Wednesday, Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell discussed their plans in the quarterback position for the upcoming season.
He praised the quarterback for what he’s done in the 10 games he’s played. However, O’Connell also plans to bring in more competition in this position going ahead.
“With this journey up until this point, you know, he’s gotten 10 starts where we’ve been able to see a lot of things that we really, really liked about J.J,” O’Connell said. “When we drafted him, we’ve seen some growth. We’ve seen some of that development time over, you know, time over time.
“But we’re still talking about quite a few opportunities of that development phase and growth phase missed. We want them to be in a competitive situation bceause of of some of that time lost. We’ve really got to push the gas pedal down and not replace development, coaching and teaching with anything, but enhance it with a really competitive situation.”
