“Release Shedeur Sanders as quickly as humanly possible”: Ex-Jets scout urges Browns to part ways with Coach Prime’s son to succeed in 2026 NFL season

As the Cleveland Browns gear up for an important offseason overhaul, debate continues to swirl around the future of Shedeur Sanders. He finished his rookie season as the Browns’ starting quarterback, but there’s no guarantee he will return to have the job next season.

Among the people weighing in on the situation is former Jets scout-turned-analyst Daniel Kelly. He believes the Browns have to do away with Deion Sanders’ son in their rebuild, noting his reasons. Kelly has been known to be a critic of the young quarterback since his days in college football.

“If the Browns have any hope of contending in 2026, the best move they can make is to release Shedeur Sanders as quickly as humanly possible,” Kelly wrote on X. As a backup, he’s proven to just to be a distraction and he makes himself a “story” in front of the cameras.

“And as a starter, he’s just a 56.6% completion percentage who threw 7 TD against 10 interceptions while posting the second-lowest QBR the NFL has seen in the past 20 seasons.”

Shedeur Sanders’ journey in Cleveland has been a mixed bag since the Browns selected him in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL draft. The Browns, under a new coaching staff, are reportedly looking to get a new quarterback this offseason, placing his future in significant doubt.

Shedeur Sanders’ potential replacement addresses the Browns’ link

One of the quarterbacks the Browns have been linked to as Shedeur Sanders’ replacement is Drew Allar. The Penn State star addressed his link to the team during his media availability at the NFL combine, after meeting the team’s contingent in Indianapolis.

“I met with the Browns as an informal interview,” Allar said. “So, yeah, that one went really well. So I actually know the quarterback coach from high school recruiting. He was the OC/quarterback coach at Northwestern when I was coming out of high school. So I was familiar with him going into that meeting.”

Allar, who was born and raised in Medina, Ohio, also spoke on his personal connection to the Browns and the city of Cleveland.

“I think any team or any opportunity that I have to play in the NFL would be a dream come true,” Allar said. “That one would be really cool and surreal just because I grew up going to Browns games and grew up a Browns fan, but any opportunity that I have is one that I won’t take for granted.”

Drew Allar is not the only quarterback the Browns are reportedly considering in the draft. They’ve been linked to Alabama’s Ty Simpson and Miami’s Carson Beck, who Browns coach Todd Monken worked with at Georgia.
