If you’re a true golf fan, you will never forget Rory McIlroy’s shot on the 15th hole on Sunday at The Masters in 2025.
With the tournament on the line, and McIlroy in reverse having dropped four shots in his last four holes, the Irishman hit a towering draw around the trees from the left side of the 15th fairway at Augusta National.
The 36-year-old made a birdie on the hole – one that helped him get into a playoff alongside Justin Rose.
Do you think Rory McIlroy ill win a major in 2026?
His game is trending but winning majors is always an incredibly difficult thing to do…
McIlroy eventually won The Masters after making a birdie at the first extra hole and completed the career Grand Slam in the process.
McIlroy’s Masters win was the most memorable victory of his career, and he’ll be hoping to defend his crown next month.
The man from Holywood, Northern Ireland, has already begun his preparations for his Masters defence, it seems.
Rory McIlroy tried to recreate famous 15th hole shot at Augusta National
McIlroy was speaking to the media at the SoFi Center on Sunday night.
After the TGL match between Boston Common and Jupiter Links, McIlroy was asked whether the roping hook he hit on the ‘Stinger’ hole reminded him of his shot on the 15th hole at Augusta National last year.
And the five-time major winner revealed that he had just taken a pre-Masters scouting trip to Augusta.
“A little bit, yeah,“ McIlroy replied.
“I was actually at Augusta yesterday and I sort of went over there and hit the shot again.
“Yeah, had two more clubs, 5-iron.“
The great thing about McIlroy’s shot on the 15th hole in 2025 is that it would have given him serious amounts of belief.
If he is faced with a similar approach on the same hole this year and in the future, he will trust in his ability to pull the shot off.
Padraig Harrington raved about another one of Rory McIlroy’s shots at The Masters
Padraig Harrington suggested that McIlroy hit a shot on Sunday at The Masters that only one other golfer was capable of pulling off – Bryson DeChambeau.
And he wasn’t talking about his remarkable shot on the 15th either!
Rory McIlroy and Bryson DeChambeau is the best ever golf rivalry. Do you disagree?
“17 was very interesting, he hit a very conservative tee shot,“ Harrington said.
“I wouldn’t have been able to play the hole that way. Justin Rose wasn’t able to play the hole that way.
“The reality is Justin Rose didn’t want 190 yards into the green on 17. Rory handled that because he’s one of the few players who can hit an iron into the clouds to get it to stop.
“Let’s face it, most players would have been hitting a six or seven iron from where Rory was. It was a very conservative play off the tee, but the second shot was the opposite.
“Himself and Bryson were the only two players in the field capable of hitting that shot.“
While McIlroy’s shot on the 15th hole at Augusta National was spectacular, Harrington is right, his approach shot into 17 was equally as crucial.
Had he not pulled that off when he did, he wouldn’t be a Masters champion now.
