Ryan Poles said his son didn’t handle the DJ Moore trade well at all. The Chicago Bears general manager got an earful after sending the veteran receiver to the Buffalo Bills earlier this week.
Poles has run the Bears’ front office since 2022. He addressed reporters on Thursday at a media session. He discussed the trade that brought Chicago a second-round pick while moving Moore and a fifth-round selection to the Bills. However, Ryan’s son, Mason, was seemingly so unhappy with the move that Moore had to personally reach out.
“I’ve mentioned this before, my son is a passionate fan of the Chicago Bears. He was not very happy with me at all,” Poles said. “I think it was cool that DJ sent him a video telling him not to be mad at dad [and that] it’s part of the business.”

DJ Moore recorded the message for Mason after learning about the youngster’s anger over the deal. Ari Meirov shared the story on X on Thursday, crediting Moore for the gesture.

Bears GM Ryan Poles said the decision to move on from DJ Moore was made despite handing him a massive contract in 2024. He cited the arrival of rookie Luther Burden as a game-changer for the roster construction.
“There’s a financial piece of it, but you’re also looking at the room,” Poles said. “And when you have Rome Odunze and how talented he is, I know he went through some injuries last year.
“You look at what Luther did. Again, that’s why you follow the draft board. I did not expect Luther Burden to be where he was, and he showed up and showed some big-time flashes. Every time that dude touches the ball, special things can happen.”
Poles referenced tight end Colston Loveland as another reason Chicago could afford to part with Moore. The Bears drafted Burden in the second round last year without planning to use him as a Moore replacement.
The receiver signed a four-year extension paying him nine figures in 2024. He lands in Buffalo at age 28 to catch passes from 2024 NFL MVP Josh Allen and work under Joe Brady, who called plays for him in Carolina years ago.
