C.J. Gardner-Johnson has signed a one-year deal with the Buffalo Bills. It’s the veteran safety’s fourth team in a year.
Gardner-Johnson is pushing back on the notion of being a not-ideal teammate.
“For me, I look at, like, every place I’ve been with, I won, Gardner-Johnson said.
“If it was a locker room problem, I just revert to whatever came out. Why now? Like, why now? If I was a locker room problem, like why now? What was the news flashes when we were winning, going 14-3? When we were on the top of the mountain.

“When I was catching six (interceptions), but where was those like, but why now? So I just take it with a grain of salt . . . it is what it is.”
Gardner-Johnson started the 2025 season with the Houston Texans. He started three games before getting released on September 23. The Baltimore Ravens signed him to their practice squad in October before releasing him before he could make an appearance with the active team.
Gardner-Johnson joined the Chicago Bears at the end of October and reunited with defensive coordinator Dennis Allen, who had been the Saints’ coach. He featured in 10 games (7 starts) and helped the Bears earn a playoff berth.
Gardner-Johnson wasn’t offered a long-term deal by Ben Johnson and the Bears, meaning that he’d be signing for a fourth team in the span of a year. The 2022 NFL interceptions co-leader is now headed to Buffalo.
C.J. Gardner-Johnson is adding Super Bowl experience to the Buffalo Bills
C.J. Gardner-Johnson will bring much-needed deep playoff experience to the Buffalo Bills. The veteran safety was an important part of the Philadelphia Eagles’ Super Bowl LIX win.
The Josh Allen-led Bills have yet to reach the Super Bowl. They were eliminated at the divisional round in the 2025 season with the 33-30 overtime loss to the Denver Broncos costing Sean McDermott his job.
Former offensive coordinator Joe Brady has been elevated to the role of coach, and he’ll be tasked with guiding the Bills to their first Super Bowl since the 1990s. They’ll hope that the addition of Gardner-Johnson and other experienced players can take them over the hump.
As for C.J. Gardner-Johnson, he’ll be looking to make an impact on the Bills and potentially secure his first long-term contract in years. The Florida Gators product is entering his eighth season.
