The 52nd Players Championship came down to just two players in the end – Cam Young and Matt Fitzpatrick.
Young entered the final round of The Players four shots adrift of Ludvig Aberg, while Fitzpatrick was a further shot behind the Swede.
However, Aberg lost his swing, and indeed his confidence, on the back nine at TPC Sawgrass, leaving the American and the Englishman to battle it out for the trophy.
It was Young who emerged victorious at The Players Championship in the end, though, after he parred the final hole and Fitzpatrick made a bogey.
Young tapped in from close range to win The Players and Fitzpatrick immediately embraced his TGL teammate.
Neither man deserved to lose, but there can only be only winner.
And fortunately for Young, he took the spoils at TPC Sawgrass.
Cam Young speaks out about Matt Fitzpatrick after The Players Championship
Young and Fitzpatrick have got to know each other fairly well over the past year or so, after playing on the same TGL team.
And the now two-time PGA Tour winner was asked what it was like to play alongside Fitzpatrick on day four of The Players.
“He’s a great guy,“ the 28-year-old American said.
“We’ve gotten to be around each other a decent bit through TGL, through our team, New York, and he is an excellent playing partner.
“He plays quick. He’s a very polite, very kind guy and enjoyable to talk to when you get the odd moment to share a few words walking around out there.
“So a very, very comfortable pairing for me, and I think you probably saw it with both of our golf. We had every right to both be nervous and found ourselves in some tricky spots, but I feel like for the both of us I think it was a comfortable one.“
It seems like both players enjoyed playing with one another.
Fitzpatrick raved about Young after partnering him on day four of The Players, and the feeling was obviously mutual.
Cam Young opens up on 18th hole tee shot at The Players
Young won The Players with his immense drive on the 18th hole at TPC Sawgrass on Sunday.
He was asked by reporters what he said to his caddie after his ball found dry land and began running down the fairway.
“Man, what did we say? I have no idea,“ Young admitted.
“We were just saying stuff, I think, to just kind of quiet our own minds. In those moments there’s a lot running through your head, and for me to have Kyle, one of my best friends, on the bag sitting there, it’s a really nice time to have something a little bit lighter in terms of conversation.
“I could have stared at my feet walking all the way down the fairway or we could have looked around and had a little bit of a laugh. I think in the moment option two was a good call.“
Young was then asked how stressful it was trying to win around a golf course like TPC Sawgrass.
“It’s absolutely exhausting,“ the American admitted.
“This place has had my number the last few years. I’ve never really had a good finish here. And yeah, it is incredibly taxing. Every shot all day long you can get yourself into trouble. There’s no easy ones. There’s no givens. And you’re going to make mistakes.
“So it’s a great test of will, a test of patience and obviously a test of hitting some good shots. So I feel like I did a lot of those things really well this week.“
Young won The Players Championship this week by playing some truly exceptional golf, especially down the stretch.
And now it’s a question of just how far he can go in the game.
