Matt Fitzpatrick compared the crowds at The Players to those at the Ryder Cup. The English golfer played this week at the PGA Tour event held at TPC Sawgrass. He had a good time on the greens and settled in second place.
However, Fitzpatrick was booed by fans on Sunday on the 18th hole. He talked about the incident in the post-round press conference and compared it to that of the Ryder Cup.
“Listen, the crowd, that was literally child’s play compared to Bethpage. If they think that that was anything, then they need to reassess,” Fitzpatrick said. “Get yourself up to New York. Listen, that’s how it is. That’s how it is.
” I would hope it’s the exact same if — well, it probably wouldn’t be because we’re a little bit more polite in Europe, I would say, but I would hope it would be of similar intensity in Europe. I knew it was coming. I had it with Jordan Spieth in 2023. Yeah, it’s funny to me. I find it hilarious.”
Notably, the 2025 Ryder Cup was held in New York. Playing on U.S. soil, the European team dominated in the field and retained its title. However, the team was booed during the game. An incident also reported that one fan threw a beer can at Rory McIlroy’s wife, Erica Stoll, at the Ryder Cup.
Matt Fitzpatrick opens up about his performance at The Players Championship.
Matt Fitzpatrick started his campaign at The Players with an opening round of 70. He then carded a second round of 69, followed by another round of 69.
He was impressive in the final round of the event and carded six birdies and two bogeys for a 4-under 68. Matt Fitzpatrick jumped two strokes on the leaderboard and settled in second place.
In the post-round press conference, Fitzpatrick talked about his performance.
“I picked up the tee quickly,” Fitzpatrick said. “I felt like I hit a good shot, maybe pushed it slightly. Both felt that the wind was a little bit off the right. Obviously I know Cam hits a draw. His moved a little bit, as well. Figured mine would do the same. Obviously just gone dead straight.
“I think that’s what’s made 17 so difficult over the last few years, and obviously even the last there, with the amount of hospitality now, it makes the wind swirl a little bit. Obviously mine has just gone dead straight there and just run through. Like I say, I felt like I hit a good drive, and once you’re out of position it’s difficult to make your par,” he added.
Matt Fitzpatrick had started the 2026 campaign on the PGA Tour at The American Express, where he settled in T63 place. He then finished in ninth place at the WM Phoenix Open.
Some of his other notable finishes this season are T14 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and T24 at The Genesis Invitational. Cameron Young won The Players Championship.
