Tennessee Titans general manager Mike Borgonzi just shared the amazing story of how the Kansas City Chiefs pulled a fast one on the rest of the NFL to draft Patrick Mahomes.
Borgonzi joined “The Schrager Hour” on March 17 and was asked about the process of drafting Mahomes back in 2017 when he was a part of the Chiefs organization. The new Titans general manager revealed that Kansas City actually leaked out that week that they were trying to trade up for a linebacker.
Once they found a trade partner with the Buffalo Bills, the Chiefs were able to jump up and snag the Texas Tech product, who would eventually net them three Super Bowl victories in the coming years.

“We see this quarterback, he’s like, ‘Wow, look at this throw, look at this throw.’ And, you know, Veach is always big with the videos and stuff on his phone, so he starts filming it and starts shooting it over to Andy. And, you know, Andy’s probably like, ‘You know, dude, it’s May right now, slow down.’
“But he was relentless with it. And, you know, I think we had to keep it as quiet as possible through the whole fall, but we pretty much knew, I think, during the fall where we were going with the pick. And, you know, the night of the draft was just, you know, we’re all on pins and needles just trying to get up there. And then we finally, you know, found a trade partner with Buffalo at 10.
“And I think, you know, because there were some rumors that we were trying to trade up, I think we might have leaked out that we were trading up for a linebacker that night.”
Borgonzi spent 15 years with the Chiefs organization, the last few years as assistant general manager, before being hired by the Titans last year to lead their franchise.

Patrick Mahomes now looks to battle back from an ACL/LCL tear

Mahomes has made quite a career for himself since entering the league back in 2017. He is a three-time Super Bowl winner, winning MVP in each of those victories, and a two-time NFL MVP Award winner as well. Mahomes has already entered himself into the ranks of some of the greatest to have played the position.
Last season, however, was the 30-year-old’s worst yet. Mahomes and the Chiefs started the year 6-8 in the 14 games he played for the Chiefs last season. He threw for 22 touchdowns and 11 interceptions before going down in December against the Los Angeles Chargers with a torn ACL and LCL, missing the rest of the season.
The Chiefs would go on to miss the playoffs for the first time since 2014. Now, Mahomes looks to bounce back from the injury in hopes of returning the Chiefs to the playoffs, and potentially, the Super Bowl in 2026.
