Brooks Koepka reveals how he reacted when he heard Patrick Reed had left LIV Golf

Brooks Koepka carded a one-over-par 73 in his first round back on the PGA Tour at the Farmers Insurance Open on Thursday.

Koepka didn’t make a birdie until his final hole of the day at the Farmers Insurance Open, and he ended the day at Torrey Pines in a tie for 98th.

However, his first round back on the PGA Tour was more than respectable, given the difficulty of the South Course at Torrey Pines.

Patrick Reed will be intrigued to see how Koepka got on at Torrey Pines when he wakes up in Bahrain on Friday morning.

Koepka left LIV Golf on December 23rd and now his fellow American has done the same thing.

Reed announced that he had parted ways with LIV on Wednesday, before the PGA Tour released a statement highlighting how the 35-year-old will be eligible to return under the past champions category.

Koepka is, of course, back in action on the PGA Tour this week, while Reed will not be allowed back for another seven months.

However, the five-time major champion clearly started a trend and now it just remains to be seen how many more players will follow his lead.

Koepka spoke to reporters after his opening round at the Farmers Insurance Open on Thursday.

He was asked to share how he reacted when he heard that Reed had followed him through the LIV Golf exit door.

Yeah, saw it on — I was with Jeff Pierce on 2 and he just kind of stopped in the fairway and asked me if I saw it,” Koepka said.

I’m like no, I’m out here on the golf course, my phone’s in the bag, so I didn’t see anything.

Yeah, it’s wild. Whatever Patrick wants to do and to be the best golfer he can be, best for his family, I’m in full support of that. I think everybody’s different, they’ve got to make decisions for what’s best for their family.

If he’s doing that, then I’m 100 percent behind him, whatever he needs to do.

After his round, the American was asked to sum up his feelings about the state of his game right now.

I felt like it was pretty good, Koepka responded.

I struck it really well. Like I said, the driver wasn’t — I didn’t hit enough fairways.

If I was able to get to the back of the ball I felt like I hit a good quality shot. Didn’t really make any putts besides 18 right there.

Yeah, it felt good. It’s been a while since I played competitive golf, so I like the way I’m playing, I just need to kind of play my way into it.

Koepka was then asked whether he felt nervous on the first tee at Torrey Pines on Thursday.

He said: Yeah, yeah, I definitely was.

I hit the fairway. I guess I should have been more nervous the rest of the round.

But why was he so nervous?

Just because I care, he admitted.

I think I’ve fallen back in love with the game. And honestly, watching my son play a little bit and wanting to be able to see him watch me, or I guess want him to watch me play well and realize how much this game’s given me, how fun it is and how cool it is to just be out here.
