Collin Morikawa and Scottie Scheffler have been on completely different trajectories over the past two years.
Since Morikawa‘s last win on the PGA Tour in October 2023, Scheffler has recorded 14 victories, including three major championships.
In total, the 29-year-old world number one has 20 PGA tour wins to his name, including four major championships, while Morikawa has won six times – two of which were majors.
Do you think Collin Morikawa will ever win on the PGA Tour again?
Morikawa is without a victory since October 2023…
Scheffler and Morikawa are close friends away from tournament play, and fierce competitors on the golf course
Unfortunately for the two-time major winner, Scheffler has been streets ahead of him over the past three or four years.
Morikawa and his caddie were stunned by Scheffler’s exceptional golf at The Open Championship in July.
The 2021 Open champion missed the cut that week, and his performances throughout the entire 2025 season were incredibly poor in general.
However, he has shown signs this week at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am that he could be on his way back to his best.
Collin Morikawa claims he can still beat Scottie Scheffler
Morikawa carded a truly sensational round of 10-under-par 62 on day three of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am on Saturday.
He looked much more like his old self out on the links on the Monterey Peninsula, that’s for sure.
When speaking to reporters after his third round at Pebble Beach, Morikawa was asked whether he starts every tournament with the intention to win, or just to play some consistent golf and see where that takes him.
“I’m more talking about those results I think where there’s a lot of positives to take I think from a top-10 finish,“ Morikawa said.
“No matter what week, no matter what tournament, I can take a lot of positives out of those weeks.
“And they’re heartbreaking sometimes, but you live and you learn and you go on and you keep pushing.
“It’s when you feel like I’m putting in my absolute everything, I’m missing the cut or I’m finishing 30th, and you’re like man, what’s going on?“
Morikawa then went on to claim that he truly believes he can still beat Scheffler, even when the world number one is ‘playing great’.
“I know deep down inside me, like, I’m a competitor, I feel like I can play against the top players in the world,“ he said.
What do you think is the real reason for Collin Morikawa’s recent struggles?
Is he just a one-hit Covid wonder?
“Even a guy like Scottie Scheffler when he’s playing great. Like, you know, I believe that and until the day I don’t, I’m going to keep going head on.
“It’s a very, very fine line to say, OK, you’re a couple shots away from a great week or you really got to dig deep to figure it out.“
You have to admire Morikawa’s confidence!
And the truth of the matter is that, in order to succeed at the highest level of the game, you need to have exactly that.
Can Collin Morikawa really compete with Scottie Scheffler?
The one huge advantage Morikawa has over many other professional golfers who go through tough times is that he has been there and done it on multiple occasions in the very biggest tournaments.
The general consensus is that if he manages to get over the line and win again, the floodgates could open for him.
The final round at Pebble Beach on Sunday will be the acid test for Collin Morikawa.
Has he really made any kind of discernible progress? Or was his third round 62 nothing more than a one-off?
Only time will tell, of course.
However, the fact that he gained 6.453 strokes on the field with his approach shots on day three at Pebble Beach suggests that Morikawa might just be back.
It’s time for Morikawa to stand up and be counted now. 28 months is far too long for a player of his calibre to have gone without winning.
