McCarthy is a Pittsburgh native and steps into the role after Mike Tomlin resigned from the position following Steelers 30-6 loss to Houston Texansin the AFC Wild Card game on Jan. 12.

Tomlin called it quits after 19 seasons with the franchise.

Mike McCarthy returns to coaching with the Steelers after a one-year gap. He last led the Dallas Cowboys from 2020 to 2024.

After his contract expired in January 2025, Jerry Jones did not renew his deal after Cowboys got eliminated from playoff.

Over McCarthy’s five season with the Cowboys, the team only won one playoff game.

However, for Dak Prescott, his guidance was pivotal. In the 2023 season, Prescott led the NFL with 36 touchdown passes and guided Dallas to a 12-5 record and an NFC East title.

After McCarthy parted ways with Cowboys, the team promoted Brian Schottenheimer to head coach on Jan. 24 in 2025.

On Jan. 4, Cowboys’ 34-17 loss to the New York Giants eliminated the team from playoff.

Interestingly, before joining the Cowboys, McCarthy was working as the head coach of the Green Bay Packers from 2006 to 2018. During the 12-years tenure, he helped the packers win Super Bowl XLV over Pittsburgh Steelers.

Dak Prescott was “bummed” after Mike McCarthy walked away from Dallas Cowboys

After Mike McCarthy exited from Dallas Cowboys, with no contract renewal in sight, Dak Prescott was disappointed.

“Bummed, because we built some things,” Prescott told ALL DLLS on Jan. 13. “But I guess they couldn’t reach an agreement. SMH.”

In December 2024, Prescott had publicly backed McCarthy during a Zoom call with Yahoo Sports.

“He’s playing on his last contract and [I’m] almost feeling helpless like I can’t help him in this situation, especially a guy you believe in so much and you believe in being your head coach,” he said. “I think he definitely deserves a chance, another contract and a chance to coach this team among more influence.”
