Dan Rapaport predicts if Scottie Scheffler will overtake Tiger Woods among the greatest players of all time

All golf fans are waiting with bated breath to see just how far Scottie Scheffler can go over the course of his career given that he had not even won on the PGA Tour this time four years ago.

It has been a remarkable spell for Scottie Scheffler. It is easy to forget now that he was a slightly contentious captain’s pick for the 2021 Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits.

How many times do you think Scottie Scheffler will win in 2026?

Over or under 4.5…

Scheffler’s victory at The American Express was the 20th of his professional career. Meanwhile, he has won four major titles.

He will complete the Career Grand Slam should he win the US Open. With that, he is undoubtedly the most dominant male golfer since Tiger Woods.

Of course, Woods is one of the most important figures the game has ever had. He won 15 majors, while no one has won more times on the PGA Tour than the 50-year-old.

It is hard to know what can stop Scheffler pushing towards those numbers right now. But speaking on Dan on Golf, Dan Rapaport predicted that he will fall short when asked if he will overtake Woods by the end of his career.

“No, I don’t think so, but I do think he’s got a really good chance to be a top five player who’s ever lived,” he said.

“Tiger’s set the bar insanely high with 82 wins and 15 majors. Scottie has 20 wins and four majors, so he’d need to do this four more times, which I just don’t see happening.

“He started a little bit later in his career. He’s creeping up on 30. Justin Rose is showing us that you can be really good for a long time, but gun to my head, will he pass Tiger? No, but I think he will pass Rory and become the best player of this generation.”

The advantage Scheffler has trying to catch up with Tiger Woods

There is no question that it is a huge challenge facing Scheffler. Just three male players have reached double figures for major championship wins. The world number one needs to win another 11 just to catch Woods.

Given that Scheffler did not stand out as a potential superstar in the early stages of his career, it is incredibly hard to predict who could charge towards the game’s summit in the coming years.

Having said that, Rapaport’s comment about Scheffler’s age seems a little odd.

Woods had won 14 of his 15 majors before his 33rd birthday. Unfortunately, injuries hampered him and prevented him from winning another major for more than a decade.

If Scheffler is able to stave off injuries, he will be much more competitive across his thirties. Woods was only able to show flashes of his brilliance – by his standards – in the majors between 2008 and 2019.

As long as Scheffler remains motivated, he could be competitive for the next two decades – if not longer.
