The narrative surrounding Tommy Fleetwood has completely changed following his victory at the Tour Championship and another outstanding Ryder Cup for the Englishman.
It was hard to not be really concerned for Tommy Fleetwood after the Travelers Championship and the FedEx St. Jude Championship. The 34-year-old had golden opportunities to win both events, and secure a first PGA Tour victory.
He would not need to wait too much longer however. Fleetwood won the Tour Championship after an outstanding performance at East Lake.
He has since followed that by winning four points at the Ryder Cup as Europe triumphed at Bethpage Black. And back on the DP World Tour, he won in India this past week.
Tommy Fleetwood will have his sights set on winning a first major in 2026
Fleetwood is undoubtedly one of the best players on the planet right now. But with that, he is arguably the number one player in the world still awaiting a first major victory.
But perhaps that will change in the near future.
Speaking on Dan on Golf, Dan Rapaport reacted to Fleetwood’s victory at the DP World India Championship by backing him to win one of the sport’s four biggest tournaments in 2026.
“This was an incredible event to watch, largely because of the trees. This was the anti-Oakmont. This was the anti-Philly Cricket. There were trees absolutely everywhere, to the point where Rory McIlroy, I don’t know about the last three rounds, but in the first round, he didn’t even bring his driver with him to the golf course. That’s how tight it was out there. It was fun watching guys play for position, it was fun watching guys not being able to just step up there with driver and figure it out after. Amazing year for Tommy continues,” he said.
“What a year for Tommy. Top point earner in the Ryder Cup, he was 4-1. I think he’s 11-3 overall. Amazing Ryder Cup record. Obviously, got his PGA Tour win, won the FedEx Cup, he’s in the top five in the world rankings. He’s actually moved up to number two in Data Golf, only behind Scottie Scheffler. He’s ahead of Rahm and Rory. Obviously, that Data Golf algorithm is heavily weighted to recent results. But Tommy’s been probably the third best player this year, you can say, behind Scottie and Rory, which is going to be an interesting Player of the Year conversation – we’ll see how Rory fares in the Middle East, trying to win another Race to Dubai.
“It was awesome watching Tommy get the win. One of the more universally-liked characters in our sport. If you don’t like Tommy Fleetwood, that’s a you problem. A major championship is the next thing on his list. I think he’s going to win one in 2026. I think he’s got the monkey off his back as far as winning in the United States. He’s got that confidence now, he’s got that swagger. There’s no more scar tissue there. That’s all away and we know how good his game, how solid his ball-striking is and how good he’s been in the majors recently.”
Tommy Fleetwood’s major championship record
Fleetwood actually had an underwhelming year in the majors in 2025. He failed to finish in the top 15 in any of the four events.
However, he does have a top five finish at every one across his career. He was second at the US Open in 2018 and The Open Championship the following year.
| Major | 2025 finish | Best finish |
| The Masters | T21 | T3 (2024) |
| PGA Championship | T41 | 5 (2022) |
| US Open | Cut | 2 (2018) |
| The Open Championship | T16 | 2 (2019) |
But, as Rapaport suggests, the victory at East Lake could be such a game-changer. He knows he can beat the very best.
And if he finds himself right in contention on Sunday at one of next year’s majors, he has no reason at all to fear finding out whether he can take that next step.
