The New England Patriots received some concerning news regarding their starting quarterback, Drake Maye. According to sports doctor David J. Chao, the sophomore star is dealing with a shoulder injury.
He said that Maye suffered the injury during their AFC championship victory over the Denver Broncos. However, Chao cannot determine the severity of the situation.
“There is no question in my mind that Drake Maye injured his right throwing shoulder against the Denver Broncos,” Chao said in a clip he posted on Monday. “Of course, how bad is the injury, remains to be seen. What type of injury, I’m still gathering data.
“Summary is, there is no question that Drake Maye has a right shoulder injury. … How much it will affect him in the Super Bowl. … Right now, way more concerned about Drake Maye’s right shoulder than Sam Darnold’s oblique.”

David J. Chao said that Maye possibly suffered the injury after taking a hit in the third quarter. He finished the game completing 10 of 21 passes for 86 yards, five sacks and one rushing touchdown.
Maye has been impressive in his second year with the Patriots under first-year coach Mike Vrabel. They finished the regular season as the AFC East champions before being crowned conference champions on Sunday. They are headed to their first Super Bowl since winning Super Bowl LIII during the 2018 season.
Maye recorded 4,394 yards and 31 TDs passing in 17 regular-season games. He is one of the five finalists for this season’s league MVP award.
Drake Maye admits to having “bumps and bruises” during their AFC championship victory over the Broncos
In the postgame press conference after the AFC championship showdown, Drake Maye was questioned about his physical health after taking five sacks on a snowy day in Denver.
The Patriots quarterback said that he had some minor injuries that he will work through before their Super Bowl showdown.
“I think some bumps and bruises, but that’s what it takes,” Maye said. “A lot of guys in that locker room are battling through things. At the same time, the best thing about it is we get another chance at it.
“Another chance at it to get healthy. Two weeks, and we’ll go into some nice weather, … But we have a chance to go win the Super Bowl. That’s what it is. It’s pretty cool.”
The Super Bowl LX showdown between the Patriots and the NFC champions, the Seattle Seahawks, is scheduled for Sunday, Feb.8, at 6:30 p.m. ET.
