Frankie Luvu made a big mistake that cost his team a huge penalty when he tackled Dak Prescott on Thursday. In the Christmas Day encounter, the Washington Commanders linebacker rushed at the Dallas Cowboys quarterback while he was unaware the play was over.

With less than five minutes to go in the game and the Cowboys leading by one score, Luvu rushed aggressively to tackle Prescott as he spiked the ball on a “3rd & 9” situation. This resulted in a 15-yard penalty for the Commanders, moving the Cowboys into the field goal range.

Brian Aubrey converted the kick from 51 yards to give the Cowboys a 30-20 lead and take the game away from the Commanders. This unprofessional play by Frankie Luvu at a time his team was looking to tie the game immediately drew a lot of criticism from fans and analysts.

Shannon Sharpe joined the many people hitting out at Luvu for the play. In a post on social media, the Pro Football Hall of Famer denounced the linebacker for the costly play.

“Dumb player gets coaches fired,” Sharpe wrote on X.

Sharpe’s comment comes amid the uncertain future of the Commanders’ coach, Dan Quinn, after what has been an underwhelming season. The team dropped to 4-11 after the 30-23 loss to the Cowboys on Thursday, placing the future of the coach in doubt at the franchise.

Frankie Luvu has a reputation for violent plays

Frankie Luvu is famed for his aggressive and violent plays, which have landed him in trouble on several occasions. The linebacker has faced the league’s discipline for repeated violations of player safety rules on the field.

The latest is his suspension for multiple violations of the hip-drop tackles rule in November. The linebacker was suspended for a game after violating the rule for the third time this season. He became the first player to be suspended by the NFL for violating the rule.

However, Frankie Luvu appealed the NFL ruling, noting that the suspension would cost a game check worth $508,333. An appeal hearing led by Derek Brooks, who was jointly appointed by the NFL and the NFLPA, overturned the suspension into a $100,000 fine.

This underscores how much Luvu’s violent play has been costly for him and the Commanders. Nonetheless, he’s previously noted that he plays football fast and violently as he does just like his Pro Football Hall of Famer mentor, Kevin Green, taught him to.
