She has been modelling for more than five decades.

Maye is the oldest woman to feature on the cover.

“If I thought I could be a swimsuit model for Sports Illustrated, people would have locked me away as a crazy lady. And now, here I am,” the author said in a video shared by the publication.

Speaking to People magazine, Maye says never in her wildest dreams did she think she would be on the cover of Sports Illustrated.

“My first reaction was, I could never dream up something like that because why would anyone have a 74-year-old on their cover, especially in a swimsuit. I do think it’s going to make women feel more comfortable in their seventies when they swim, as well as women in their twenties and thirties,” she told the publication.

Maye’s daughter, Tosca Musk, wrote an essay about her mother’s milestone for the swimsuit issue.

“My mom is 74 now. In her years on this planet she’s earned two master’s degrees in nutrition science, won awards in the dietetics field, has been in countless fashion shows and editorials, and she’s even appeared in a Beyoncé video. She is an uncontainable force, and she’s the most fearless woman I’ve ever known,” the filmmaker wrote.

Just a few years ago, Maye made history when she became the oldest CoverGirl spokesperson at the age of 69. All three of her 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥ren have gone on to be successful. Her son, restaurateur Kimbal Musk, owns The Kitchen Restaurant Group.

Tosca says Maye wasn’t like other mothers she knew growing up.

“Lots of mothers worked, but mine worked double—as a model on nights and weekends, and as a dietitian during the day. She even ran a side business as a modeling coach out of our garage in Johannesburg, South Africa… She differed from the other moms I knew, too, in that she was doing it all herself. My parents divorced when I was little.”
