‘Happy Gilmore 2’ shatters another streaming record

It seems everyone has an opinion on “Happy Gilmore 2″—and all of its many cameos. But no matter your thoughts on the long-awaited sequel, the fact of the matter is that it’s been a streaming smash hit. And one that continues to smash records.
We already knew that the Adam Sandler comedy broke Netflix’s record for views by a movie in its opening weekend with 46.7 million. But now a much bigger number has been reported for the total number of minutes the movie was streamed during that first week.

As noted by Variety, Nielsen streaming data showed people spent 2.9 BILLION minutes watching the movie in its first week after being released on July 25. And that is a record for the most single-week viewing minutes since Nielsen started a streaming top 10 back in 2021.

The previous record was held by another Netflix movie, “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery,” which drew 2.2 billion minutes for its first week in December 2023. So, “Happy Gilmore 2” beat that by more than 30 percent.

Is it too early to think about a ‘Happy Gilmore 3’? With all these impressive viewership numbers for No. 2, there must be at least some Netflix executives who think it’s a good idea.
