Los Angeles, California — HBO has officially announced one of the most anticipated projects in recent country music history: a 10-part documentary series titled “If I Was a Cowboy,” chronicling the life, heartbreaks, and evolution of country superstar Miranda Lambert.

Set to premiere later this year, the series promises an unfiltered, deeply personal look at the woman behind the hits — the fierce Texan whose music has shaped a generation and whose honesty has redefined what it means to be a modern country artist.

“This isn’t just about the fame or the music,” Lambert said in a teaser clip. “It’s about the fight to stay true — to my roots, my voice, and myself.”

A Story Decades in the Making

For nearly two decades, Miranda Lambert has blazed her own trail through Nashville’s wild landscape — equal parts fire and vulnerability. From her early days as a 19-year-old on Nashville Star to her rise as one of the most awarded female country artists of all time, her journey reads like a Southern ballad: full of triumph, heartache, grit, and redemption.

The docuseries, produced by HBO Documentary Films in collaboration with Lambert’s own company, Vanner Productions, promises to go beyond the surface of the superstar’s success. It will explore the person behind the stage persona — the daughter of Texas law officers, the woman who turned pain into poetry, and the artist who refused to let the industry tame her.

Each episode is set to explore a defining chapter of her life — from her small-town beginnings in Lindale, Texas, to her breakout success with Kerosene, her highly publicized marriage and divorce from Blake Shelton, and her artistic rebirth in recent years.

“We’re not polishing anything,” said executive producer Jessica Hopper. “We’re telling the story the way Miranda lives — real, raw, and without apology.”

The Meaning Behind the Title

The series takes its title from Lambert’s 2021 hit “If I Was a Cowboy,” a song that perfectly captures her rebellious spirit and her deep connection to the country’s outlaw roots.

In the song, Lambert imagines herself as a cowboy — free, unbreakable, unapologetic. Now, that theme extends far beyond the music, becoming the heartbeat of the documentary itself.

“I think everyone’s got a little cowboy in them,” Lambert said in an interview filmed for the series. “Mine just happened to wear fringe and mascara.”

Throughout the 10 episodes, viewers will see how that same untamed spirit has guided her through the highs and lows of fame — from the lonely hotel rooms on tour to the award-show spotlights, from heartbreak to healing.

Never-Before-Seen Footage and Personal Archives

According to HBO, the production team spent over a year filming across multiple locations, including Texas, Tennessee, and Las Vegas, capturing Lambert’s life both on and off the stage. The series will include never-before-seen footage from her personal archives, early home videos, and studio sessions spanning her 20-year career.

The filmmakers were also granted rare access to Lambert’s private ranch in Tennessee — where she finds peace among her horses, dogs, and husband, former NYPD officer Brendan McLoughlin.

“That ranch is where Miranda’s heart beats slow again,” said producer Hopper. “It’s where she writes, heals, and remembers who she is.”

Several episodes will focus on her songwriting process — revealing the raw, unguarded moments behind some of her biggest hits like “The House That Built Me,” “Over You,” and “Bluebird.” Fans will see how the songs they’ve loved for years were born from very real pain, reflection, and resilience.

Famous Friends and Familiar Faces

“If I Was a Cowboy” will also feature appearances from some of the biggest names in country music and beyond — including Reba McEntire, Kenny Chesney, Kelsea Ballerini, and Chris Stapleton — all of whom share their memories of Lambert’s rise and influence.

Several longtime collaborators — such as songwriters Natalie Hemby and Luke Dick — appear in candid interviews, shedding light on Lambert’s fearless creative process and her role as one of Nashville’s most respected storytellers.

“Miranda doesn’t just sing a song — she lives it,” Hemby says in the trailer. “And sometimes, that means walking through hell to find the words.”

A Journey Through Reinvention

One of the central arcs of the series follows Lambert’s transformation over the past few years — both personally and professionally. From her decision to leave her longtime record label and start Vanner Records, to embracing independence and speaking openly about her struggles with anxiety, body image, and self-worth, Lambert’s evolution feels like a masterclass in self-discovery.

The docuseries doesn’t shy away from the hard parts — the media scrutiny, the heartbreak, and the criticism that often follows women who refuse to fit the mold. Instead, it embraces them as proof of resilience.

“For a long time, I thought toughness meant never letting ‘em see you cry,” Lambert says in one emotional clip. “Now I know real strength is being able to sing through the tears.”

Fans React with Emotion

Since the announcement dropped, fans have flooded social media with anticipation and gratitude.

“We’ve been waiting for this,” one fan wrote on X. “Miranda’s always been real — now we get to see the woman behind the legend.”

Another commented,

“No one tells the truth in a song like Miranda Lambert. I can’t wait to see her tell it in her own voice.”

Many believe the series could do for country documentaries what The Last Dance did for sports — redefining how legacy and humanity are portrayed side by side.

The Team Behind the Vision

The project is being directed by Rachel Grady and Heidi Ewing, the Oscar-nominated duo behind Jesus Camp and Love Fraud, both known for their emotionally raw, character-driven storytelling.

“Miranda is one of the most honest voices in American music,” Ewing said. “Our goal is to capture that honesty — the kind that makes you flinch, laugh, and cry, sometimes in the same minute.”

The series will also include Lambert’s new original song, written exclusively for the project, rumored to be titled “Cowgirls Don’t Cry Alone.”

A Cowboy Spirit That Endures

At its core, If I Was a Cowboy isn’t just a documentary about fame. It’s about freedom — about what it means to live on your own terms in an industry that’s always trying to write your story for you.

It’s a reminder that Miranda Lambert’s legacy isn’t built on perfection — it’s built on truth, grit, and the kind of courage that can only come from the open road.

As the trailer fades to black, Lambert’s voice can be heard saying softly:

“I’ve been called a rebel, a sweetheart, a troublemaker… but I’ve always just been me. And that’s all I ever wanted to be.”

“If I Was a Cowboy” premieres this fall on HBO and Max — a 10-part portrait of a woman who never stopped riding toward her own truth.
