Three-time Super Bowl champion Patrick Mahomes tried to recruit a player from his alma mater, the Texas Tech Red Raiders, for this year’s NFL draft.
At the NFL Scouting Combine on Friday, former Red Raiders wide receiver Reggie Virgil opened up about his recent interaction with the Chiefs quarterback. He also highlighted how Mahomes is already trying to recruit him to join Andy Reid’s team.
“(Teaming up with Patrick Mahomes) would be everything,” Virgil said. “Him being a Tech guy too, I just know it, like, he reached out, was telling me like, I was at the Senior Bowl and it was his assistant quarterbacks coach.
“And he told his quarterbacks coach, “Virgil is a guy for sure.’ S, just knowing he thinks highly of me, already, it’s so cool. I would definitely learn a lot. Be a better player for sure.”

Reggie Virgil played the first three seasons of his collegiate career with the Miami RedHawks. He transferred to play for Texas Tech last season. The wide receiver recorded 705 yards on 57 receptions and six touchdowns. The team finished with the Big 12 championship and qualified for the playoffs, but lost to Oregon in the Orange Bowl quarterfinal.
Patrick Mahomes, on the other hand, played for Texas Tech from 2014 to 2016. In three seasons, he recorded 11,252 yards and 93 TDs passing. The Chiefs drafted him with the 10th overall pick in 2017.
Last season, Mahomes had an underwhelming year. The Chiefs failed to make the playoffs for the first time since 2014, finishing with a 6-11 record. Apart from this, the quarterback also suffered a torn ACL during their loss to the Chargers in December.
This brought an abrupt end to his 2025 campaign as he continues to rehabilitate from his injury. Mahomes played in 14 games and recorded 3,587 yards and 22 TDs passing.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid opens up about Patrick Mahomes’ rehabilitation process
Last Friday, Chiefs coach Andy Reid shared some details about Patrick Mahomes’ recovery from his ACL tear.
He said that the quarterback is working hard to get back into form and potentially be ready for the start of the upcoming season.
“He’s around here (the team facility) all the time ,” Reid said during a Zoom interview. “He spends a lot of time here, seven hours a day. He’s in there cranking away, making progress every day.
“He keeps showing up, so that’s about half the battle on these things when you have injuries that you show up, and it’s not going to be a pleasant thing every day. You have to fight through it, and you have to attack the challenges of the workout and rehab. He’s doing a great job of that.”
