Mike McCarthy may be gearing up to select his quarterback of the future in the 2026 NFL Draft.
Pittsburgh sports radio host Andrew Fillipponi took to X to share a video of new Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy scouting LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier at his pro day. Check it out here.
Nussmeier is expected to be a mid-round selection in the upcoming draft. The 24-year-old senior comes off a disappointing final collegiate season with the Tigers. After putting up a season of over 4,000 passing yards and nearly 30 touchdowns in 2024, Nussmeier passed for only 1,927 yards in 2025, along with just 12 touchdowns and five interceptions.

He led the Tigers to a 5-4 record as a starter and experienced heavy criticism for his performances against elite competition. Nussmeier was benched in his games against both Texas A&M and Alabama, but it was claimed that an abdominal injury had been hampering him all season.
Michael Van Buren Jr. replaced him as the starter prior to LSU’s game against Arkansas for the rest of the season. After a disastrous senior season, it will be interesting to see where Nussmeier falls after initially being believed to be a first-round talent back in 2024. He finished his college career with 57 total touchdowns.
Mike McCarthy prepares to take the reins in Pittsburgh post-Mike Tomlin

Mike Tomlin is out as head coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers after 18 years with the organization. The Steelers signed ex-Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy to fill the void back in January. In all his seasons with the Steelers, Tomlin never had a losing season with Pittsburgh. Now, McCarthy will come in to try and build off of an already legendary culture left behind by his predecessor.
Currently, all signs indicate that the Steelers want Aaron Rodgers back as their quarterback in 2026, which would ultimately reunite him with McCarthy from their days in Green Bay. Rodgers signed a one-year, $13.65 million deal with the Steelers last offseason to serve as their quarterback for the year.
He led Pittsburgh to a 10-6 regular-season record, securing a playoff spot in which they ultimately were eliminated in the first round by the Houston Texans. Many within the organization reportedly are excited to build off what Rodgers and the Steelers established in 2025. Should Rodgers return, and the team decide to draft a young quarterback to sit behind the former Super Bowl winner for a season, it could prove to be a winning formula for producing their next franchise signal-caller.
