Cam Newton took a jab at Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen while talking about Carson Beck. The quarterback and his team, the Miami Hurricanes, lost 27-21 at the hands of the Indiana Hoosiers in this season’s national championship game.
Beck threw an interception in the final play of the fourth quarter that handed Curt Cignetti’s team the win. On Tuesday’s episode of the “4th & 1” podcast, Cam Newton talked about the Miami quarterback’s weak points while drawing a comparison with Josh Allen.
“How we judge great quarterbacks is by two things, and two things only,” Newton said. “How you play late in the season, and how you play late in the game. We judge quarterbacks by how they play late, whenever that late is.
“Don’t tell me you’re a great quarterback in the first quater, second quarter and third quarter, and all of a sudden in the fourth quarter, when we need you to lock in the most, you’re not great. For the most part, consistently, Carson Beck hasn’t shown that. That doesn’t make him a bad player. Like I was saying about Josh Allen today. He’s just not clutch.”

Carson Beck spent the first five seasons of his collegiate career with the Georgia Bulldogs. In January 2025, he transferred to play for the Miami Hurricanes in his final year of eligibility. The quarterback recorded 3,813 yards and 30 TDs passing and is expected to declare for this year’s NFL draft.
On the other hand, Josh Allen just finished his eighth season with the Buffalo Bills. The 2024 NFL MVP qualified for his seventh straight playoff appearance with the team after finishing second behind the Patriots in the AFC East. They secured a 27-24 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars in the wild-card round.
However, Josh Allen and his team suffered a 33-30 overtime loss to the Denver Broncos in the divisional round showdown, crushing their hopes of a Super Bowl appearance. The quarterback tallied 3,668 yards and 25 TDs passing while rushing for 579 yards and 14 TDs.
Nick Wright blames Josh Allen for disappointing divisional playoff loss to the Broncos
Josh Allen failed to make a difference against the Broncos in the divisional round showdown. He completed 25 of 39 passes for 283 yards, three touchdowns, two interceptions, and four turnovers.
However, Nick Wright believes that the 2024 NFL MVP should bear the majority of the blame for the Bills’ playoff exit.
“The whining about the officiating is embarrassing,” Wright said on Monday on “First Things First.” “And this one, an odd but obvious interception. What else could it have been? It certainly wasn’t a catch and it certainly wasn’t an incompletion. It was an interception.
“The only person who got why the game went the way it did was Josh Allen. They lost that game because their superhero quarterback lost them the game.”
Following the game, the Bills also fired coach Sean McDermott after nine seasons. He helped them to eight playoffs in nine seasons but never reached the Super Bowl. Dermott had a 98-50 overall record with the team
