A major fire caused serious damage to the clubhouse at West Essex Golf Club on Monday afternoon. The blaze broke out in Waltham Abbey with thick black smoke visible across the surrounding area.

According to the Essex County Fire & Rescue Service, the fire began shortly before 3 pm and spread through much of the two-storey clubhouse. Emergency crews were called in as the situation escalated.

Six fire crews and around 60 firefighters were deployed. Crews from Harlow, Rayleigh Weir, Loughton, Chelmsford, Grays, and Corringham worked to contain the fire and stop it from spreading further.

Fire officials confirmed that everyone inside the building was safely evacuated. No injuries were reported, and all staff were accounted for. Members of the public were advised to stay away from the area while crews continued their work.

In an update later in the evening, the fire service said that firefighters were making good progress and were focused on preventing the fire from spreading to the rear of the building. Officials also confirmed that an investigation will take place once it is safe to do so. Club chairman Gary Boyd later issued a message to members confirming temporary closures.

“Dear Member, as you may know by now there has been a catastrophic fire at the club today starting shortly before 3 pm. “It is an absolutely tragic situation, but everyone is safe. The club, range, and course will be completely closed at least tomorrow, Tuesday, and the club will be in touch shortly,” Boyd said. (via Golf Monthly)
