“I don’t see it”: Adam Schefter reveals stance on Curt Cignetti’s future in NFL amid major coaching shakeup leaguewide

Curt Cignetti has done the impossible with Indiana in the last two seasons. The former high school coach was brought to Bloomington after two successful seasons at JMU. He’s since then transformed the Hoosiers from a perennial doormat to a contender in the landscape.

Following a season where he’s on the charge of leading Indiana to the national championship, there’s been a lot of talk about an NFL team going all the way to hire Cignett. However, Adam Schefter noted that’s not currently on the table for any NFL team in his appearance on the “Pat McAfee Show.”

“I don’t see it,” Schefter said. “I haven’t heard anything yet that tells me that he’s going to the NFL…By the way, that doesn’t mean it can’t be, but to this day, to this moment right now, nobody has said to me, cursing that he’s looking to go to the NFL. And no NFL team has said to me, ‘We are plotting to make an overthrow of the Indiana football coach.’”

Curt Cignetti, who is undefeated this season with a Big Ten championship, boasts a 25-2 record in two seasons at Indiana. He is 44-6 overall in his four years as a coach in the Football Bowl Subdivision. He’s also had a host of individual awards to his name in those periods.

Peter Schrager believes every NFL team with a vacancy should call Curt Cignetti

Following what he’s done in the last two seasons at Indiana, Peter Schrager believes Curt Cignetti should be a candidate for every NFL head coaching opening this offseason. The analyst made this known during his appearance on “Get Up” on Wednesday.

“The guy has done a phenomenal job,” Schrager said. “The question is, can you pull him from what he’s doing right now? But I’m with Rich [Eisen]. I would make that call. And if other teams have not, shame on them. I’ll be there. You look at the foundation that he builds his team on.

“And Mendoza deserves all the accolades he’s getting. Don’t miss the forest from the trees. Their O-line, D-line have been phenomenal. Since he’s gotten there, and he’s gotten guys from JMU. These aren’t first-round pedigrees. These are grind guys. And this dude understands how to get the most out of the least. That’s what you’re looking for in the NFL.”

Curt Cignetti’s quest to win the national championship continues on Saturday when Indiana comes up against Oregon in the Peach Bowl for the semifinal of the College Football Playoff. The Hoosiers defeated the Ducks 30-20 in a high-octane contest in Eugene during the regular season.
