“I know they want me back”: Darius Slay teases reunion with CB’s former championship squad 1 day after Steelers exit

NFL veteran cornerback Darius Slay has teased a potential comeback to one of his former teams in the wake of his release from the Pittsburgh Steelers. Slay played 10 games with the Steelers, posting 36 tackles with one fumble recovery and three passes defended.

It didn’t take long for fans to speculate about his future and suggest where he would play next. As expected, his two former teams, the Detroit Lions and the Philadelphia Eagles, were mentioned. Slay added fuel to the speculation during a conversation with Twitch streamer Janky Rondo.

Rondo called the cornerback after he was waived and asked if he would wear a “green and black” uniform.

“Let me go ahead and ask… Green and black?” Rondo asked.

“We gon’ see!” Slay responded.

“You know they want you bad, bro,” Rondo added.

“I know they do,” Slay responded. “You know I got nothing but love for my city.”

Darius Slay spent five seasons with the Eagles, recording 272 tackles, three fumble recoveries and nine interceptions in 74 games. He was a member of the defense that dominated Patrick Mahomes and Co. in Super Bowl LIX.

Slay’s wife, Jennifer, sparked speculation on Tuesday with her reaction to the defender’s release. Additionally, she sent a message to Eagles fans on Wednesday.

“Philly….ya’ll are fckn amazing!!🥺 the love is so real❤️🫶🏼🙏🏽,” she tweeted.

Another subtle move that Jennifer made was changing the heart emoji in her username from yellow (Steelers) to green (the Eagles’ color). Multiple signs suggest that Slay is interested in a Philly reunion.

Eagles reporter confirms Darius Slay’s interest in returning to Philadelphia

In the wake of the Darius Slay news, NBC Sports Philadelphia reporter John Clark said that the team and the cornerback are interested in running it back if he clears waivers.

Slay arrived in Philadelphia in 2019, when the Eagles traded for him from the Detroit Lions. He became an All-Pro with the NFC North team in 2017, while adding three Pro Bowl selections to his resume. He added three more with the Eagles while becoming one of the most reliable players in his position.

The defending Super Bowl champions’ defense went through several changes during the offseason, including parting ways with C.J. Gardner-Johnson and Slay.

One of them could return to Lincoln Financial Field this season, but the Eagles’ defense looks as strong as any. The offense is the weak link of a team that entered the season considered the clear favorites to win Super Bowl XL.
