‘I Was in Shock’: Erika Kirk Opens Up About Finding Her Husband Dead

Tragedy on Campus: Erika Kirk Recounts the ‘Shock’ and ‘Horror’ of Seeing Her Husband Charlie Kirk Dead After Campus Shooting

September 24, 2025

Erika Kirk says late husband's death sparked 'revival' at Arizona memorial

“It was like stepping into a nightmare,” Erika Kirk whispered, her voice cracking as she recalled the moment that forever shattered her world. What was meant to be a normal afternoon on a college campus — filled with student dialogue and ideas — ended in gunfire, chaos, and an unimaginable loss. Her husband, conservative political commentator Charlie Kirk, was gunned down in broad daylight while speaking to a crowd of university students. The nation watched in horror, but no one felt the blow more than Erika.

“I was in shock. I couldn’t move, couldn’t breathe. It felt unreal—like the world had stopped,” she said in her first public interview since the shooting, sitting with tightly clasped hands and tear-filled eyes.

Charlie Kirk, 32, founder of the conservative youth organization Turning Point USA, had been touring campuses to engage in open dialogue and debate about American values, culture, and politics. His appearance at Redwood State University on September 15th was part of a scheduled tour. Witnesses say the event had been peaceful—tense, perhaps, given the political climate—but not dangerous. That changed in an instant when a gunman, later identified as a 22-year-old student, opened fire just minutes after the Q&A session began.

Charlie was hit multiple times. He was pronounced dead at the scene before emergency responders could arrive.

For Erika, who had been waiting backstage to greet him after the event, the sound of gunfire was the first signal that something had gone terribly wrong. What followed was a blur of screams, sirens, and shouts—then silence. And then, the moment that would haunt her forever: seeing her husband’s lifeless body lying just a few feet from the podium.

“I still can’t believe it.”

“No one prepares you for something like that,” Erika said softly. “One moment, I was checking my phone, waiting for the talk to end. The next, people were running. Security was yelling. I froze. And then I saw him… I screamed his name, but he didn’t move.”

She paused, wiping tears from her cheek.

“I just dropped to my knees beside him. I remember grabbing his hand. It was still warm. I kept saying, ‘Wake up, Charlie. Please wake up.’ I kept thinking, this isn’t real. This isn’t how our story ends.”

What makes this tragedy more heart-wrenching, Erika explained, is that Charlie had been aware of rising threats and tensions on campuses—but he believed in pressing forward with conversation, not retreating from it.

“He told me, ‘If we stop talking, they win. If we’re too afraid to speak, we’ve already lost.’ That was Charlie. Brave to the end,” Erika said, her voice now steadier, though grief still clung to every word.

A Polarizing Figure, A Human Loss

Charlie Kirk was no stranger to controversy. A frequent guest on conservative news outlets and a vocal supporter of former President Donald Trump, he drew both passionate support and sharp criticism from different sides of the political spectrum. His presence on college campuses was often met with protest—but until now, never violence of this magnitude.

The university community remains shaken. Students have held vigils, faculty have issued statements of sorrow, and security protocols are under nationwide review. The suspect, who has been taken into custody, reportedly had a history of mental health struggles and had posted cryptic messages on social media before the attack. Investigators have not yet released a motive.

But for Erika, those details don’t change the fact that her partner, her best friend, is gone.

“I don’t care what people thought of his politics. He was a husband, a son, a friend to many. He was kind. He loved his country, but more importantly, he loved people. Even those who disagreed with him.”

Moving Forward, One Breath at a Time

Since Charlie’s death, Erika has found herself caught between intense public attention and private devastation. She has remained largely out of the spotlight, choosing instead to grieve with family and close friends. But in sharing her story, she hopes to honor Charlie’s memory—and maybe, begin healing.

“I wake up and expect to hear his voice. I reach for my phone to text him. And then I remember,” she said. “Every day hurts. But I know what Charlie would want. He’d want me to stand up. Speak truth. Not let hate win.”

In the wake of the tragedy, Turning Point USA has announced the establishment of the Charlie Kirk Freedom Scholarship, aimed at supporting students who promote civil dialogue and free speech. Erika says she hopes to be involved in the program, and while she has no immediate plans to return to public life, she hasn’t ruled it out.

“Maybe one day I’ll speak on the same campuses Charlie did. Maybe I’ll finish the tour he started,” she said. “Not today. But maybe someday.”

As the sun sets on a chapter filled with passion, controversy, and now profound loss, Erika Kirk holds on to one truth: “He died doing what he loved—speaking truth, challenging minds, and standing firm.”

And though his voice has been silenced, his message, through her, may echo on.
