Collin Morikawa’s 2026 PGA Tour season got off to the worst start possible with a missed cut at the Sony Open.
Morikawa carded rounds of 72 and 68 to miss the Sony Open cut by a solitary stroke.
And it’s now looking like the 2026 PGA Tour season could be a real struggle for the 28-year-old.
What made his missed cut at the Sony Open even more disappointing is the fact that, on paper, Waialae Country Club is perfectly suited to his game.
What do you think is the real reason for Collin Morikawa’s recent struggles?
Is he just a one-hit Covid wonder?
It has been a tough couple of years for the two-time major champion. Morikawa caused real controversy on the PGA Tour in 2025 when he refused to speak to reporters after just missing out on victory at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in March.
His game was well below par in general as well, and he’s still without a win since October 2023.
Morikawa’s really struggled with his putting on the PGA Tour in 2025, and there were no signs of improvement in Hawaii this week.
Everyone must accept the truth after Collin Morikawa misses the Sony Open cut
To say that Morikawa’s game in Hawaii this week was rusty is a huge understatement.
His driving and iron play was as solid as it usually is, and he finished inside the top-10 in both categories during his second round.
However, his two main weaknesses reared their ugly heads again on both days in Hawaii.
Morikawa ranked outside the top-100 in both strokes gained putting and around the green on day one.
The man from Los Angeles then finished 73rd in strokes gained putting and 86th in strokes gained around the greens on day two.
It’s obvious that his putting and chipping are his two main problems.
However, the bigger issue is that this isn’t just a slump that Morikawa is in right now. We are way past that.
Is this perhaps just the new normal for him? It’s worth remembering that there were no fans present during his 2020 PGA Championship win, while limited fans were allowed into the ground at Royal St Georges for his Open triumph.
There is a very real danger that the player we have seen struggle so badly over the past two seasons is the real Morikawa.
Perhaps Collin Morikawa needs to develop a siege mentality
The six-time PGA Tour winner seems to have reached a crossroads in his career.
Will Collin Morikawa win on the PGA Tour in 2026?
Who knows, maybe Morikawa will prove me wrong and go on to win many more majors throughout his career.
However, it seems like we might have already seen the best of the 28-year-old.
While Morikawa may manage to pick off the odd PGA Tour win here and there, his elite standing in the game really does need to be called into question.
Hopefully Morikawa will read articles just like this and it will motivate him to improve and rediscover the form that saw him win two majors out five from 2020 to 2021.
